Well , I just harvested my uncased poo cake. These were the 2 of the same size that were cased

675 and 640 respectively.

Now for the uncased

and the verdict

679 wet. BIGGER then either of the cased.

Maybe all the talk about cube's not needing to be cased isn't just talk, lol.

Another added bonus is no casing material stuck to them that needs to be cleaned off

Definitely going to repeat this little experiment with some of the 7 I planned on casing tonight. Think I'll case 5 and let the other 2 alone.

Hippie is right; a cased tray doesn't yield more than a uncased tray unless you really are experienced with casings. However, if you fully master them, a casing can yield more, but it's not night and day like some people think.

So why bother with a casing? Well when a cased tray is done just right, something miraculous happens. Let me explain with a couple pictures:

What you see above is a 12-quart dish tray holding a cased substrate of Ecuadorian cubensis (first flush). The surface area of that tray is about 0.9 square foot, and the yield from that one tray IN THE FIRST FLUSH was 1400+ grams (over 3 pounds)! What is even more amazing is that this isn't unusual; a properly managed casing in the right hands can do it every time, and many old timers on here like agar can back me up on that. I do not believe one can get that sort of yield without a casing.

I agree with ya 100% Blue. I'm definitely not giving up on casing. Did this just for fun , and I like to watch a cake go through fruiting . Get to watch everything happen  I think the reason it out produced the 2 that were cased was because of the increase in surface area exposed to light.

I'm still working on mastering casing's , but I just picked this 12 quart a hour ago

a personal best so far

Looks real nice, Hippie! I love seeing trays like that, packed with goodness and ready to pick! You know they can grow so fast that the substrate can get pretty hot too! I had a temperature probe once show the temperature of the bed core rise from about 78F to around 90F during the fruiting, and that wasn't from the chamber heat either. The biological activity during fruiting can become so extreme that the temperature of the whole bed rises significantly.

50/50+ is 50% peat , 50% verm. + a buffering agent to adjust the PH . I used Hi-Yield horticultural hydrated lime. Plus 15% crushed oyster shell as a long term buffer.

Nice flush HC! A point for all to keep in mind casings are not needed but certainly do help with yields in less than optimum conditions. Uncased trays can fruit prolifically if conditions are optimal in the  environment where as cased casings are much more tolerable of environmental conditions. Can't wait to see the second flush HC! Also keep in mind that the casing layer provides alot of moisture that the fruits use up this helps keep the substrate shrinking to a minimum.
Bottom line cased or uncased optimally flushes can be comparable but more often than not newbies grows will not be optimal so give yourself the best bang for the buck so to speak. If ya ever need help harvesting HC give me a call!

{btw, welcome back, i haven't spoke to you since}

this looks like something i might try in the near future........
i'm no pro yet, but i do love to watch the little guys grow also.......
and i never thought about flipping the substrate over on a tray and letting it grow by itself.........good idea!

50/50 ver/coir is 50% volume vermiculite and 50% volume coco coir. My chamber along with that particular grow is detailed here . Since that thread, the chamber has been changed to feature uniform, from tray top to bottom, temperature control and better air circulation to the bottoms of the tray. I will describe the changes in a Pan Cyan log in a week.

for watering that big b-day cake... i have used drinking straws...

drill a hole little bit into the cake. insert a drinking straw, and fill the straw up with water, it will slowly drip into, and provide water for the whole deal.

Old post, I know... But I've got a couple questions to ask...

First of all, let me say NICE GROW, HippieChick!

I'm working with uncased horse poop right now too so I'm curious about a couple things.

Do you think uncased poo fruits better if its layed out like a cake rather than sitting in the tray?

Did you continue to experiement with uncased poo? If so how did everything turn out for you?

And did you ever experiment with that wax paper on top as a simulation casing layer?

Thanks for the help!

And if anyone else has experimented with uncased poo I'd apreciate your advice too.

Adding a casing layer to a properly hydrated substrate when growing cubensis is totally optional, regardless of the substrate.  It would be essential if you didn't want to spawn your grains to a substrate, in which case you would simply apply the casing layer on top of the grains by themselves.

This isn't to say they aren't beneficial...but new growers don't need to bother with them initially. I don't think so anyway. ~Pixie~
