Well...just got through PCing my fifth or sixth batch of wbs. It seems a little dry. (should the seeds rattle inside when shaken?) This is a crappy picture...but I'm sure you can make it out. This is a quart jar.

This time I soaked for almost 30 hrs. I covered the wbs with water and waited until the water level went down, then repeated the process again and again... Rinsed well. Soaked the seed with boiling water for 30 minutes (did not simmer...just soaked with very hot water) Rinsed and drained for 30 minutes. I loaded my jars...tyvek, disk with two holes (one for air and one filled with polyfil)...alum foil...pc'd for 60 minutes at 15 psi. The heat was not cranked up. The flame was set on warm..just enough to keep the pressure at 15psi. What did I do wrong?

It looks ok. Maybe a little on the wet side. Properly hydrated WBS won't stick together, can be easily shaken, and may sometimes LOOK a little on the dry side. What's all of the pre-soak for? Props on not simmering. Steeping the grain results in much less exploded grains. Lose the Tyvek, and bump your PC time to 80-90 mins. What's the problem, have they not been colonizing?

I guess there no problem then lol. Some peeps told me that a rattling noise upon shaking is not good...it means the wbs does contain proper moisture. I guess I was mistaken. I did a G2g yesterday morning...holy shit did those jars take off. All 7 wbs jars already show signs of strong growth...and my 2 casings prepped yesterday show some signs of mycelia poking through...barely. I know you're not supposed to peek but I was worried because I only put a 1/2 " of casing on one of them even though 2 full quart jars of colonized substrate is underneath. I made some more casing today...should I add another 1/2"?

with mine i use one hold in the lid and tyvek oon top of that. the wbs on the top usually dries a bit, but everything else stays nice n moist. sometimes it looks dry, but it isnt. i used an lc to innoc some jars and have excellent rhizo growth on about 10% of the wbs and its only been 2 days.

No, personally, I never go over 1/2" or it interferes with my pinset/yield. An inch deep casing layer would be entirely too deep for a 2 quart sub.

ebass, way to go on the effort/not giving up. That's how you learn sometimes, will just make those first home growns casings that much better Plus, you're now practically an expert at hydrating grains
