Casing? Colonization?

Let me start of by saying that this is my first grow... I started out with a liquid culture and inoculated a bunch of PF tek jars. Once the jars were fully colonized, I broke them up and spawned them to pasteurized horse poo according to the horse poo tek. That is the point I am at now.
I have got 6 bread pans sitting in the incubator at the moment colonizing. After doing a bunch of reading, I have gotten a little shy about using a casing layer because of the many problems people seem to have with them. I guess I am still considering it, but I am uneasy about it. I know casings are better, but will I still get decent results if I just fruit the colonized poo? If I decide to just fruit the poo, should I wait until it is fully colonized before putting it into the fruiting chamber, or should I treat it like a casing?
I am new to this, and any advice at all is greatly appreciated.

you seem to know what you're doing if you got this far with no contems... if you don't want to mess with a casing layer thats ok! you're gonna get a good crop either way... if i was you i'd case with 100% verm (a light case) and fruite the chance for contem is much lower and its almost no work. but either way you're gonna get a good crop so don't worry about it too much!
enjoy

Whichever method you choose, do not move into fruiting conditions until your substrate has FULLY colonized. Look into Roger Rabbit's wax-paper tek. It's basically just applying a layer of wax paper directly onto your substrate, creating a micro-climate to stimulate pinning. I've tried it with mediocre results. Better than using nothing at all, but not as good as a well maintained casing layer.

I would highly recommend a casing, even if it's a simple 1/2 inch verm layer.
I have had non cased subs sit in the FC and do nothing until contams started to form. Water wasn't pooling or anything, but I feel like the high humidity environment from a cool mist was responsible.
Casing is a piece of cake once you do it once or twice, and you want to learn eventually... why not now?

Thanks for the input. I have 6 pans, so I have been pondering trying a peat/verm casing on a couple of them, just to see how it goes.
If I use a 1/2 inch casing layer of vermiculite, should I put it in the fruiting chamber right after I case it, or should I wait until mycelium is poking through? Will the mycelium even colonize vermiculite, or is it just a layer of added moisture?

If you add 1/2" verm, let it incubate for a few days. Once you see white poking through, cover it with some verm from an area where white isn't poking through. You want to make sure it's all very close... but with only 1/2 inch it will all be very close. Then put it in the FC.
If you have the desire to do peat/verm, go for it. Grab some calcium carbonate to buffer the PH. There's reasons why straight verm isn't the best casing, but either way it's better than no casing.
