colonizing
    #5497676 - 04/09/06 07:37 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

i had a few jars that didnt colonize. Its been about a month now. So i took one and i took the lid off and put some water in there from the sink. a few days later Bam, i got some fuzz. it looks ok, but i dont have any tape or anything on the holes and it smells. It dont smell wretched, but almost like a goldfish tank. Is that a good smell or is it contaminated?

has anything like this ever happend to anyone else before?

I want to put some more water into the other jars, how can i do this in a sterile way as not to contaminate them?

if you took the lid off and put tap water in it i can almost guarantee it is contaminated

You had sterilized substrate exposed to open air (lot's of contams floating around) then added unsterilized water. I have little hope for those jars.

If you want to water to your jars in a sterile way I would suggest boiling it for about 20 minutes then sucking it up into a sterile syringe and injecting it into the jars. I really don't know how well this will work, I have never tried it. I could see the water just pooling at the bottom of the jars, not being absorbed into the grain.

 that's my attitude with most things in that situation.

Try shaking the jars really good after might help spread the water around.  There grain right?

Tips:
Get your moisture content right the first time. It always worked for me to add about 55cc of water per jar (standard half pint recipe) Of course you can always do the squeeze test. You just squeeze a handful of the mix. With a firm squeeze only a few drop should trickle down your fingers.

Also. It might not be that your jars are too dry. It might be that you injected spores into them while they were still hot. Make sure you allow them to cool overnight...

Somethings dry out jars. Like incubating on a heating blanket.
