If the spore print comes out white, It could be something along the lines of mycena, or one of the similar genera that contains small gray/white mushrooms. They are difficult to identify to exact species and too small to be of any real edible value, so they should be disregarded from an edible point of view.

I agree with both of you. by the way, what is the best surface to do a spore print on? I am doing mine on a paper towel because I thought the spores would stick to the rough texture better than say just a plain piece of paper, but since I only have one specimen and in the case it was white spores, then what?

always want smooth paper and white primarily if not not enough mushroom to go around to try on black or dark paper at same time.....always cover with cup, bowl, or something equatatble to reduce air flow....paper towel will "suck" up the spores and the light reflection which seems to aid the eye.....holes in the paper towel are like grand canyon to the spores which are ultra fine dust.....for white spores on white paper nothing like the wipe with your finger for contrast.....can sometimes take over a day as spores arent always so forthcoming or sometimes never .....maybe too dry, etc.,,,,,thicker the print the better and you always want to read the darkest shade of the print as an incomplete black spore can appear gray on white paper for instance....see all the time.

"Take a spore print by cutting the cap from the stem and placing a cap on a sheet of aluminum foil. The spores should drop in an hour or two. It is sometimes preferable to let the mushroom drop its spores for up to 12 hours to get a good deep print."
Shroom huunting FAQ.
I supose you could see any color on a reflective serface. and there is NO spores getting though aluminum.

Aluminum foil is best if you plan to save/ship the spores for propagation or microscopy purposes.
For ID by color purposes, white paper it the standard.
