Buying Stuff

I will readily admit to being an enthusiastic consumer. I like stuff and I like my stuff to be nice. I am definately willing to pay more money for quality stuff because cheap stuff tends to fall apart. I like having a car that doesn't break down, I like having a TV with a good picture, I like having comfortable and good-looking furniture, etc..
But, I cannot fathom paying excessive amounts of money for something just because it has a certain name on it. For example, I needed some shower rings a while ago. I looked in a "Pottery Barn" store and I found some for $30. I went to Wal-Mart and found practically identical shower rings for $7. Who the fuck would buy the ones from Pottery Barn?
Why would I want to buy a $40,000 Lexus when I can get a Toyota of similar quality and features for $25,000 or less? Why would I buy a pair of jeans for hundreds of dollars when I could get a pair of similar quality for $50 or less?
To me, it just doesn't make any fucking sense to throw money away like that. Will I pay for quality? Yes. Will I pay for prestige? No.

cause. all those things that are cheaper are being produced in china/taiwan, under sweatshop conditions.... not that i really care... but thats a reason to spend a little more money. so your not supporting the supression of people
even though designer clothes companies make their clothes that same way but everyone has always known designer clothes are a total rip off anyways

Sweat shops are actually better than the alternative in those countries (living as a meager farmer). Also, the people have a choice to work or not work in those places. But, the lack of democracy in China does bother me. Taiwan is a democracy though.
I guess what got these anti-splurging thoughts into my head was going to some local stores that were oriented towards well-to-do people. The things that were for sale were twice the price of what they should have been. These stores are selling this stuff for these prices because rich people will pay just for the hell of it.

i def pay more for, say, groceries by shopping at my local co-op - but i think the extra cost is worth it in supporting a market-model that i find positive & sustainable, plus to get organic produce from local farmers.
i never really buy anything but food, beer, drugs, and concert tickets, though

I really don't have a von dutch hat, but I do have a vial with James Brown's face on it. It was only 3 dollars though.

same here, I like my stuff to be nice too. Ofcoarse it depends on what I find valuable. For example sound quality is important to me so I like nice ausio equipment, but I'm fine with riding a cheap crappy bike that is allright and gets me where I need to go. And indeed, often you can find something the same quality for a much lower price.
Years ago I worked in some supermarket for like 2 months. In the cookies part I found two identical pakcages with the same cookies, only a different brandname printed on it and one of them was twice the price of the other
