Just had a quick question about Ph buffers...
The long term ones are better for MORE flushes...And the short term ones are for needing a Ph adjustment immediatly.
When you you need one over the other? Wouldn't it be best to utilize both?
What should be used for a mix of coir and peat?...Long term or short term?...And at what ratio
Also, I don't have a Ph buffer , so are there any specific measurments that I could do so that I wouldn't need something to measure the Ph? Like for every 1 quart of peat/coir mix add in...A teaspoon of ph buffer...?
Sorry for all the questions everyone, I rarly ask so many questions, but I'm really trying to get this down pat and reading bits here and there are making it quite confusing!
Thanks everyone

Also, Coir as a casing ingredient is getting bad press around here lately as it commonly results in overlay...

My bad, I meant to say Verm. and peat
And yea, I recently read BH's experiment with Coir and peat..
Can't wait to see the results.
Thanks for the link, checking it out now.

I prefer to use the 50/50+ slightly modified. The casing recipe I'm about to give out is time tested and works, as long as you have the ingredients available to you. This will get you pretty close to about 7.5 if you don't have a PH meter. Here is the recipe:
15 1/2 Cups of vermiculite 12 Cups of sphagnum peat moss 3 1/2 Cups of coco coir 2 Tablespoons of hydrated lime 3 1/2 Cups of oyster shell lime Water is added as needed.
A little tip Agar gave me was to soak the peat moss and oyster shell lime over night in some water. This has shown to completely absorb the oyster shell lime and leaves the peat moss at the appropriate PH levels. I'm sorry if I butchered your advice here Agar. Anyway, once the peat moss and oyster shell lime have soaked overnight, add it to the rest of the casing mix, water added to field capacity.
That's it. Great PH levels, coupled with an even casing layer, equate to awesome flushes.

Damn that sounds awesome.
This would be the first time anyone's ever given me something so specific...
And both of you did it, that means it happened twice in a row for the first time =-o...
Thanks guys...That shit owns.
Wronguy - I'll be trying that out, simplying because it sounds to damn perfect
I've master casings, But, coir always wanted to be difficult with me ..I've only heard about peat, now I will get to experience it.
Thanks a bunch guys!

Hey Wronguy...
Any specific way to sterilze?..I don't want to mess up the chemical properties with heat (if that's even possible lol).
Just trying to be safe instead of sorry

I microwave my casing mix over 3-4 smaller containers. I will microwave covered for 5 minutes, stir with a sterile spoon, microwave for an additional 5 minutes and remove. Allow to cool for a 4-6 hours, (optional) shaking the closed container every hour or so to speed cooling (optional), and keep sealed until ready for use.
I haven't had any problems with chemical alteration due to heat, so I can't be much help there.

There ya go .
The oyster shell was bought in a brown paper bag, both at a feed store.

Check the phone book for farm supply/feed store. I doubt Home Depot will carry oyster shell. Either way, you'll get a much better price at a feed store.
The place I bought from didn't have powdered oyster shell, ask for calcium carbonate, they should know what you want. It will either be oyster shell, or high calcium limestone. Key word is high calcium, the magnesium will be between 1-3%.
They also carry crushed oyster shell. Oddly, it was a bit pricey, like a dollar a pound. I've used it, but am skeptical about the benefits. The chunks are the same size after the casing is flushed out... better off with powder.

i bought just a bunch of shells in general, not oyster shells. it was at Petsmart and was for the bottom of an aquarium. I assume this will still be alright?
