Casing Cake Depth

I just saw this picture of someone's casing here on the forum:

I'm wondering if the crumbled cake is meant to be that thick. I broke mine up into nickel size pieces and spread evenly in the pan. It just covers the area and is about an inch thick. Is this acceptable? Will I get smaller shrooms because they don't have access to enough cake to grow big?

Sub. depth is rather important, pending on the person at hand.
If you like several flushes, you'd probably make the sub thicker 3-4inches, simply b/c it's packed with nutes...
If you like just a single flush, then you'd make it 1-2 inches...
I know that scatman use to make his 2inches(or was it 1 1/2?) and it did well...
Not sure how yours will do to be honest...I'd predict that the mushies will grow to a certain point, then drop veil and sporulate...At an early stage more than likely...due to lack of nutes and water (not much sub.)...
one inch is rather thin...
The guy above however....(the pic you posted i mean)
I think he put a bunch of sub. mix (or w/e it is) on the bottom so that the top of the casing layer would be higher up near the plastic..This way c02 can just "fall off"....He should have just used something less deep...
And he broke it up like that b/c he didn't care about making it even....
Lots of people break up the myc. well so that when they case, they won;'t have to patch and scratch to get the myc. even. (for an even pin set)...
that's just my .02

hey thats my pic. i thought that that it looked familiar. that is one of my coir + verm. casing mixes. i followed the From syringe to print using rye tek. http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/26177 the bottom layer is casing mix then one quart substrate (yes it had to be broken apart to get out of the jar, i didn't break it up very fine because i didn't know if handling it that much would damage the substrate. this is my 1st attempt at casing) the pic that you posted was after 1 1/2 days in my incubator so it is not absolutely level in the pic. here are a couple more pics(not sure if it is the same casing though)

i am going to patch them tonight then back in the incubator for a few more days then it's into my martha setup. look for the grow log soon
