Help repairing windows?
    #5496363 - 04/09/06 12:02 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

So, I turned on my laptop this morning and got:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

\windows\system32\config\system"

I popped in my Windows install disc to attempt to repair it, but all it did when I typed in the repair option was bring me to a dos prompt.

I am stuck. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

almost sounds like a virus has corrupted the sys32 file... if so, your FUBAR

Put the Windows disc in and reboot the computer. You should get a setup program that asks you if you want to install a new copy of Windows. Say yes.

If this doesn't work, format the computer and then reinstall Windows. Only do this if you have all of your stuff backed up and you have the appropriate drivers for your peripherals (video card, sound card, etc...) backed up. It really helps if you have a "Recovery disk" that probably came with your laptop.

I did chkdsk and my disk is fine. I think me registry is corrupted. I found a Microsoft help page that looks like it addresses the problem. I just have to see if it actually works.

You'd be right.

Do you use system restore?

Try booting up and pressing F8, then booting into "Last Known Good Configuration"

I get the same message every time I get to the safe mode screen regardless of which option I chose.

I tried what I found here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545 but when I try to create a temp folder in dos to move the files to, I get "access denied". Does anyone know how I can get around that?
