Kasparov No Longer Number One

Having ruled the chess world for over 20 years as the world's top player, and holding the record for being the world's number one ranked player 23 times, GM Garry Kasparov finally drops from the top spot due to inactivity in FIDE's April 2006 Rating List. Taking his place at the number one spot is the current FIDE Chess Champion GM Veselin Topalov with a rating of 2804.

At his peak, in July 1999, GM Kasparov reached and incredible rating of 2851 which has yet to be toppled by anyone else. However, Topalov and GM Viswanathan Anand are within possible reach of breaking this mark if they continue their amazing performances. Could Topalov and Anand become big rivals as we had with Karpov and Kasparov?

When a FIDE ranked player in chess chooses not to play or stay active for a period of 12 months they are completely dropped from the rankings, unlike boxing or tennis where players simply fall in the rankings over time.

Life after chess has been very active for Kasparov. Russian politics has been atop his agenda, along with miscellaneous chess promotions which you can read more about in Google News.

Kasparov brought us many memorable moments in chess. In February of 1996 Kasparov took on IBM's Deep Blue Supercomputer. The world was watching as Kasparov defeated the supercomputer 4 to 2. IBM chose not to give up and offered a rematch which took place in May 1997. The second time showed victory for the computer winning 3.5 to 2.5. Kasparov continued his fight against the machines two more times, once against Deep Junior in January 2003 which ended in a 3-3 tie and again against Deep Fritz X3D in November 2003. This match was in a 3-D environment and ended in a draw as well.
