Anyone try anything else other than honey or Karo for a homemade LC.. I was gonna do some experimenting and was wondering if it is just the sugar in the honey and Karo that is needed by the myc or if there is something else i should look for..

Maple syrup works as a replacement, I'd use it over karo or honey personally. Real maple syrup is preferred over the store bought type. The best LC ingredients hands down are L. Malt Extract and Dextrose though.

It doesn't have sugar I don't think but some people around here swear by it. I don't know proportions... you'll probably have to do a search.

Yeah, I tried a few....
Agar, of course, has the most experience with all manner of beer, fruit juice, yeasts, malts, sugars, etc. Basically, I think any roughly 3% solution of sugar will produce a healthy liquid culture. Glucose (dextrose) is the most readily digested sugar for the myc, but just about any sugar will eventually work, it just might take a few extra days for the myc to figure out what enzyme is needed to break it down into digestible pieces. Complex sugars (disaccharides) are just two simple sugars hooked together. For example, sucrose is just a glucose molecule bonded to a fructose molecule.
Karo syrup is probably the easiest of all to use (where it's available) since it is clear to start with and readily shows bacterial contamination by turning cloudy. You can try to supply other required nutrients by adding diluted potato water, V8 juice, flat beer, etc, etc, but karo by itself seems just about as good without complicating the procedure. As Holydiver says, though, if you are near a brewing supplier, the ultimate is probably light malt extract and dextrose.

straight vanilla extract isn't going to work, when you read people mention it its because light corn syrup (aka karo) usually has a vanilla flavor additive... but its not straight vanilla extract
