Two Species? Morels
    #5494018 - 04/08/06 06:10 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

I found the larger ones all within yards of each other, and the smaller ones all together in another place maybe 50 yards away, under the same kinds of trees, etc. Do you think they are different species or are the smaller ones just younger versions of the big ones? They seem a lot darker...

I ought to mention they were found near Eugene, OR under some sort of big conifer as well as dead hardwoods along the edge of a creek.

At a quick glance they look like yellow morels and black morels. They're still doing molecular studies to figure out how many species of morel there are.

All of your specimens should be edible, as long as you thoroughly cook them. There have been a few reports of poisoning associated with black morels and alcohol, so it's probably a good idea to restrict alcohol intake on the same evening you eat the mushrooms.

Happy mushrooming!
