WBS clumps together after PCing
    #5494006 - 04/08/06 06:06 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Well the title says it all; my WBS is clumping together after im PCing it to such a point where after shaking it very hard it doesnt come apart. This only happend to one of the four jars i PCed in the last batch. I had them on their sides so i could fit more in my PC and have tyvek top covered with 2 coffee filters. Did water get into my jar because its on the side?

Add a couple of drops of JetDry to your soak water.

I think you can add some verm as well. I would make sure when you use a glove box or a flow hood. I would be curious to know if jetdry would be better. I have not heard of it before either.

also you can try to shake them up while piping hot then place back in the PC too cool.

Same shit happens to me when I put my jars into my PC on there sides. The side of the bottom jars closest to the heating element is turning all mushy then once it cools it's stuck together.... They don't do well after inoculation... the mycelium has a REALLY hard time colonizing the big clumps.

I was thinking the same thing as you. Maybe water getting into the jars.. So I put tin foil over my lids and sealed it by put some elastic bands on really tight..... they still clumped up...My only guess now is that it's the high heat coming off of the element..

I've just decided to put one less jar in and keep them standing up.

If your jars are the same as mine....You might as well toss them out right now and not waste your time with them. I tried one batch to see if they would colonize..... only the un-clumped side of the jar colonized....I'm gonna do a grain to grain with that mycellium.. just to get some use out of it.

Thanks, this is exactly my problem. I really appreciate the help.

JetDry is the stuff you put in your dishwasher to keep from getting those nasty lil water spots that piss ya off and make the company think you're dirty or some shit, cuz they always look at ya funny when serve drinks the day after you ran out of JetDry. Anywho, I'm just curious as to what it does to prevent clumping. Is chemical contamination not an issue?

I've over-filled my quart jars to the point where I could only shake the top 1/4 of the WBS. I just inocculated with 10cc of LC and they did just fine.

Or, you can rinse the grains in a collander or large pot before use. Birdseed and even organic rye have a lot of chaff and dirt/dust which causes the grains to clump up. Rinse them clean before PC and they'll be fine later.

Starches too thats the sticky stuff :frown:
A couple of drops won't hurt a thing guys and really does help but rinsing throughly and draining properly is of utmost importance.

Clumping can be reduced by the addition of gympsum. Just a tiny bit will do.
