Psilocybe cubensis "Treasure Coast" PF-Tek cased
    #537932 - 02/01/02 03:37 PM (22 years, 2 months ago)

Cake Substrate: Dark rye flour, vermiculite. The water added to the substrate was boiled and while still hot 2 teaspoons of honey was added. Honey was dissolved and fragrant water allowed to cool and be added to substrate. It made the substrate sticky on the hands, but still was easy to work with. Pressure cooked for 1 hour, in a PC with 5 other 1/2 pint jars. After pressure cooking, it was noticed that the honey had maybe carameled onto the glass, and the cake looked harder than the batch without honey. Cake created Dec. 9, 2001.

Inoculated with Treasure Coast spores from a syringe from Captn Max.
Incubated in dark and at 83 degrees Farenheit, fairly constant. Slow colonization, caramelized areas of cake cause trouble for mycelium perhaps, cake is completely colonized approx January 29, 2002.

Casing : Ryche Hawks 50/50 Tek loosely followed. Vermiculite moistened with boiling water and allowed to cool at room temperature inside semi-sterile area. 1/2 inch layered in bottom of ez-foil aluminum tray, dimensions 8 inches by 3 3/4 inches. Cake crumbled inside ziploc bag, black (burnt?) vermiculite grains noticed, cake consistency is VERY stiff, but still moist, stiffness believed to be result of caramelization between substrate grains. Cake layered in tray about 1/2 inch thick. 3/4 inch mixture of boiling water moistened vermiculite + worm castings added to top.

Placed inside perlite lined container, boiling water allowed to cool for 10 minutes then added, humidity easily 100%

Now for the wait.

February 2nd, 2002:
Looking at the crack between the casing and the tinfoil tray, you can notice rapid mycelial growth is occuring. No photo (yet) because he?s not sure how photogenic this development is, and the digital camera is elsewhere at the moment. This is very encouraging, after having little success at cakes due to impatience for fruit maturity. Temperature is approximately 72 degrees farenheit, which should (?) be nearer to 80 until mycelium is exposed on the top, correct? A sealed bottle of heated water to use as a heat source is added to the terrarium.

Baraka, what do you mean by "yell at you" ? Are you referring to angryshrooms nick?

Peace

GODDAMNIT WHY THE HELL DO YOU AHVE SO MUCH WATER IN YOUR PERLITE!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

ehheheheeheh I just jokin too

No, but seriously I've heard that too much water actually inhibits the perlites function as a humidity source...it cant evaporate the water as fast, therefor theres less humidity.
SO WATCH OUT OR I MIGHT YELL AT YA! heeeeee ehhahahhhahaa (im crazy its ok)

daily misting continues, mycelium can be seen poking through in a couple spaces, looking through crevices shows a fairly even mycelium bed under casing layer.  For a higher quality copy of the top picture where you can really see the mycelium poking through and saying "hi" click here (350k, but I just love the picture).

I'd apologize about the image size, but no one told you to click on this thread

Originally I was going to post this as a "wtf is wrong with my casing, help help help" post, but now that I take a look at it, there are pins!! Holy Heck batman, thats amazing.
Ok so here goes.

Pin-tastic!

I've got the casing you see there (the one with the pins) in a rubbermaid container, with perlite on the bottom, and I fan it everytime I think about it (at least once a day). Does this seem like it should work?

This is a picture of my casing incubation chamber, I'm wondering if this is ok for my purposes?

Cmon peoples, heckle my setup, help me make it better!

I cant say I've been really pleased with the fruiting capabilities of this mushroom, I've found its really a bitch to get good fruits (maybe its just me). I'll post a link to my thread with pictures of my TC cakes that I'm really mad at, they produce a shitload of little itty bitty shroomies, damnit I want bigguns!

They are potent though (from my experience), eating a spoonful of aborts makes me pretty happy. I havent really gotten enough material to really blow my doors with it though.

Hopefully when this casing starts to rock I'll be able to answer your questions a little better.

It's filled with heated water and set in the perlite layer, keeps the temperature up a bit (regulating effect) and maybe heats the perlite layer, adding to the amount of moisture evaporated out of it. Thats my thought anyway.

I wish, my pressure cooker is gone right now, but I hope that I can talk one of my friends into buying one again. You DO need a PC for straw teks right?

I tried the oven-bag tek, I'm still debating whether or not it worked, I'm not sold on it at all. I'll stick to these casings, the pins look much bigger today, its very encouraging.

What range of temperature does the thermometer need to read, I have a pretty good digital one here, the range goes up to 302 F or 150 C ?
