My bud asked me to ask you all for pics of colonized straw for him.
We'd be thankful for any pics,

Old thread, I know, but I needed an opinion and this is one of the most recent and relevant. Here goes:
My straw bag is looking a little like the pic at the very top, but not NEARLY as colonized as the others. So I've been sitting on it, letting it colonize in my dresser drawer for an extra week or so. I take a look at it today, and see that there are still stray pieces of straw that have no more than the lightest layer of slightly fluffy mycelium--but they're not white. There are white spots in between. BUT! Whoops, got a big fat stalk growing inside the bag. In the dark. Does this mean it's colonized for sure? Or does it just mean it's "colonized enough" for the area sprouting the shroom to fruit? Does the presence of fruit make it 100% safe to case?

Does mycelium actually ever colonize the straw itself fully, so that it's completely white, or just the spots in between it? It's a really weird medium, at least from the perspective of someone used to looking at cakes, poos and grains.

... without a hint of irony.;) it would have probably colonized faster, if you had sat on it.
straw benefits unlike other substrates by being compressed, the more the better, so i gather. to help close up all those open spaces so that the myc doesn't have vast chasms to traverse from one strand to the next.
as a shroom is growing it seems likely that it's ready to fruit.
what are you growing ?

B+, amazingly healthy strain in my experience. I've been putting it through clone after clone, and I've had no weakening whatsoever, fast colonization, medium-sized but plentiful and healthy fruits.
Yeah, compression seems to work well--this was compressed, and is now a tight little football, but the next bag's going to be wrapped up tight with tape.
I guess I was just so tentative about pulling it out to fruit because it seems too good to be true. I've got a whole fucking bale of this stuff in the trunk of my car, and if it's this easy to put together, I'm sticking with it for good. Pasteurize, drip drain, and crumble... whole process took only a few hours. I was all excited to have 16 new PF cakes coming in soon, but now each and every one is going to be spawn for a mycobag full of straw.
I don't know what kind of crop size I'm going to get out of each bag of straw, but I know that I was getting 2-3 dry eighths per 10oz cake. Sixteen quarters = 4oz. By weight, I'm guessing all that straw is going to give me pounds from the same number of cakes. That's enough psilocybin to sit in my freezer and last me until I am an old, old, mushroom-headed man.
