Opinions on Service Pack 2

Ok, I'm very skeptical of this update. It's known for it's instability, including people reporting their OS just crashing on them after installation.
However, I need it to run After Effects 7.0. Can I get some opinions of the computer savvy who have had this update installed?

It isn't the update, but rather the company that produces the OS/Update that you should worry about.
> It's known for it's instability
All of their products are known for instability. The "blue screen of death", "ctrl-alt-del", etc...
> including people reporting their OS just crashing on them after installation
I have seen this as well, but it is pretty rare. About the only time I see SP2 fail to install cleanly is when the system has been hosed by spyware.
> Can I get some opinions of the computer savvy who have had this update installed?
Opinions? Sure. Microsoft is a predatory monopoly that has single handedly done more harm to the computer industry than all other players involved. They tout innovation while using their monopolistic weight to destroy any challenge that comes along. A horrid, horrid company that people should be embarrassed for supporting through the purchase of their products.
As far as running their crappy OS... I wouldn't run XP without SP2 installed because of the spyware/malware threat. Be sure that you backup your most important data to offline storage before installing the update. Be sure you have good power before installing the update. A power outage in the middle of the update is a very bad thing. Close out as many third-party applications before installing the update as possible. Don't use the computer while it is updating, just let it do it's thing. Be sure you have a lot of time... the update can take a while, especially on slower machines. If the update looks to be locked, wait, wait, and wait some more. The wait even longer before you give up. A locked update = a hosed machine, most likely. Be sure you know how to restore the important data you backed up, just in case. Also, be sure you know how to reinstall the complete system if needed. Although you probably wont have to, better to be safe than sorry and have all your drivers ready, etc.

other people have problem i have read about, but XP is even more unstable without SP2, it fixes many of these issues. Ive updated all 3 of my home computers to SP2 without a problem, and file transfers and what not over the networkseems to work a little faster too.

I recommend slipstreaming sp2 rather than just installing on top of your existing installation - that's how things get screwy (more than the usual microsoft screwiness). instructions

I disagree, if it wasn't for Microsoft or IBM we wouldn't be where we are today computer-wise, copyright infingement or not. But that's for another thread (feel free to start it, I'll post my opinion!).
I got Norton Ghost making an exact image of my drive right now, I should be safe.
Bi0, thanks for the tip, but Im safe with Ghost, and I might just partition the entire drive before I install anyway. In either case I'm good to go.
Thanks for the advice, all.

You are correct on both counts. IBM helped the computer industry excel to where it is today. You are also correct, Microsoft has held the computer industry back to where it is today. Without Microsoft, the computer industry would be much, much futher along than it is today. Tired debate, not worth a new thread... i'm embarrassed to continue it in this one... Oh well..
Good idea on the ghost... the slipstream advice was very good as well... take it to heart.

Posting to say that I installed SP2 now without any problems. Haven't noticed any difference in OS integration with peripherals or software, but didn't have my machine croak on me either.
Once again, thank you for those that helped.

I've never had any major problems with it.

No problems here either. And I'm talking about a computer that it's on 24/7.

I can't even get SP2 installed. The last two times I tried, it would run into some random error halfway through the installation.. crash my system.. and then I would get a blue screen of death upon reboot... which would then require me to reinstall windows. So I said screw it.

You should try slipstreaming it like posted above, or installing right after installation of the OS.
