jars incubating, first grow...

so my WBS jars are currently in the incubator, set at 82 degrees fahrenheit. theyve been in there for a little over 48 hours, i just checked them today to see if there was anything not really expecting anything of course, but my thermometer is inside the incubator and i wanted to make sure the temp was right, so i just looekd real quick. i didnt see any growth of mycellium although a few of the bird seeds looked whitened... But my main question is is it normal to smell the birdseed strongly or not becasue i defintely could smell the WBS.
the only thing im worried about is that i didnt drain long enough and that they were too wet, because i drained them for awhile but they were stacked pretty high.

my wbs took about 4-5 days before I could see any mycellum growth. I think 80 deg. is optimal incubation temp... but sure thats not enough to make a difference..?
I could only smell the wbs when I wrapped the jar in the coffee filters (in my case paper towels ;p) - since then, barely a scent... using TiT method btw
I drained 3 jars worth of seed for 7-10 min.. could see some moisture. But too much moisture would probably only cause extra unwanted growth, not inhibit it... right =)

well ive always read optimum temperatuure is 82-86, and since the temp in the jars gets two degrees hotter or so from the mycellium i figured 82+2 would put it smack dab 84 in between 82-86

too much water would definitely inhibit growth...

im not sure if the amount you're talking about would though...
also i was wrong about optimal incubation temps.. its 86 deg.. though some people say (unverified) that mycellum creates its own heat, therefore the incubation temp should be about 5 deg. below maximum growth range... heres the link...

so is it normal at all to smell the WBS...? also how long does it take to see the first signs, if it takes like 5-6 days and i have nothing, does that mean it probably wont at all, or what

I never smell it after incubation, only after cooking.
It usually take between 5-7 days to see some life after inoculating, if using multispore, ie syringe of spores. Give it a few more days, but if you don't see anything within the next 4 days, I'd say something went wrong.

The only time i smell WBS is after i take the lid of my PC. I found that 80 is a good temp because sposively like ti has been mentioned before the jars get 2 drg hotter.
On a side note I am working on a project for one of the vendors and i needed some malt extract, so i asked for some. Tell me why they sent me 10 lbs of it. i mean common i could go for like 2-3 oz haha

My incubator has a wbs-esque smell to it since I put on the coffee filters. Its mildly unpleasant but i just spray the container with oust and it goes away for a while. Other then that Im 6 days into incubation of a quart jar and I saw signs after day 4 and my temps are maybe around 78-80. Give it a little time.
