Very very late colonization
    #5488118 - 04/06/06 10:04 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Miracle of god occured, and my 40 jars that were showing absolutely no growth for the past 2 months decided it was time to start colonizing. Some of them exploded with speedy colonization, while others spread very very very slowly. In other words I have plenty of jars, all at various stages of the colonization process, and few of them yielding odd colors. Hence, I have a multi-part question . . .
#1. Should I still use the jars once they're done colonizing? Can jars that colonize 3 months late still be considered ok?
#1.a. If I should still use them, some of them are showing white like they're supposed to in one spot where it's colonized very thickly, but it's very pale white over the rest of it, maybe because of not enough aeration or not enough space, I'm not sure, but all the substrate is being held together in a cake, and it sure does look like mycelium with no overwhelming reason to think otherwise, is it still ok to use?
#2. If few of my jars are yielding colors, does that mean I didn't sterilize them right?
#3. Since they are colonizing, but at varying rates, and with varying progress, what is to blame here? Was it the substrate? Was it the spores? Was it the sterilization process? I followed PF Tek, and it has worked for me before with no problems, so I'm not sure what could be the problem.

40 jars - 12 EQ - 12 B+ - 4 White Morel - 12 Huautla

Of these, the B+ seem to be the most forgiving and acclimatizing, while the Huautla follow somewhat close behind, and the EQ strain is picky if you mess up I guess because it's least promising. Could just be the syringes I got though.

Any help is much appreciated, thanks!

The colored ones are contaminated. I've had jars start late and ones go very vey slow, but I haven't had good luck spawning with ones that took a long time. I'd post pictures and we could tell you the ones you might want to fruit.

Most likely it's moisture content. You might have made a mistake with your mixture. I've accidentaly put too much water in the PC and then had jars way too wet.

Do yourself a favor and never tell how many jars you have going.

Just a precaution.

take care

The ones with any color other than white is a contam....

And if it took longer than 2 weeks to show mycelium, then it's probably not mycelium...A good way to tell is by smelling the jars...Don't stick your face all up in 'em, don't want to get sick, but you can easily spot a contam. by color or smell with no prob.

Whispy looking mycelium = cobweb mold (colonizes fast, as in days..

I'll search the contam forum to try and get you some pics so you can see what your looking at

Good luck man
