Curious about PF tek
    #5487729 - 04/06/06 08:19 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

I was just sitting here reading posts, and wondered why people birth jars?

Why not just pop the top, give it a light mist, perhaps shoot some sterile water down the side and cover the jar with foil?

Seems like water retention would be much easier. I know other types of shrooms are fruited this way.

Anyone done it?

I wouldn't think so. 1/2 pint cakes don't have big flushes. I'm sure it's been tried and rejected, I was just curious as to why.

It's called growing invitro. Many people do it.

AFAIWA, invitro occurs inside the jar. What I'm talking about is using the verm layer as the casing layer.

The answer to your question is surface area (yield).

i think its cause light will cause the sides of the jar to pin and grow invitro...they would have to be removed to clean the cakes off and would make it a hassel so everyone just births them...
maybe taping the sides and bottom with some black paper before they go into the fc would stop that from happening and make it more practical..i was thinking about trying this with grain in 1 quart jars... ive seen regular shrooms grown in this manner.

Just popping the top off you think they'd grow straight up? I think most would probably just end up growing along the sides of the jars... probably just like an invitro grow. Probably way better for retaining water, but you can just dunk em and pretty much fill them to capacity when they dry out. Plus you'd have all your jars being used instead of free to start another grow. I've never done it. But I figure if people want a better way to grow than the classic PF Tek, they have move on to grain casings and bulk substrates... whether it's an improvement or not, growing on cakes still sucks.

Hmm, well a pint half full would be the same size as a widemouth half pint. I'd have to buy BRF and go through the whole process.

It could very well be a surface area problem, but when you're talking 50-80 wet gram flushes, I'd think widemouth would be plenty big enough. Give it a shot, I'd be curious to see the yield.

Seems like there would be too much water in there... the drops on the wall would get on the cake. Im curiose too tho, anyone tried it?
