WBS casing: layer thickness ratio
    #5487467 - 04/06/06 07:26 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Well, my first WBS jars are just coming ready for casing. Yippee!

I'm planning on doing some G2G transfer to jumpstart some other jars, and then doing a 50/50+ casing with the rest of my grain. After having read many teks, I'm still a little confused about the proper ratio of layer thicknesses in my casing. Here's my plan, please comment:

bottom: .5" of vermiculite
middle: 2" of well-myc'd WBS
top: .75" of 50/50+

Does this sound about right?

You don't need a bottom casing layer, nor a top casing layer that thick. Also, I would go a bit thicker on the substrate itself. Personally, I'd go: No bottom, 3-4" colonized WBS, and 1/4-1/2" casing layer. 24 hours incubation for 1/4", 48 for 1/2" has always worked for me.

Im going to be doing basically the same thing as Tengumai, so i figured id use this thread.

What's difference be between a 1/4'' and a 1/2'' casing layer?
Would one yeild a better pin set? Or does it just matter on the substrate depth?

1/2" is closer to optimal, but 1/4" is nice if you're in a hurry and can't wait for a thick casing to colonize.
