I was at some garden place the other day and came across some bags of cow manure. Would this be ok to spawn and use in a casing? I'm not looking for amazing results just decent.

Most of the time it's composted cow poo. People have had mixed results from brands like Black Kow, but even when it works, the results aren't spectacular.
I'd search "Black Kow" for more info & results.

Yea I know Im not gonna have great results but better than using just grain by itself. So black kow is a good brand or what should I look for in a store bought bag?

would I be better off just using straw alone than bothering with store bought manure?

from everything ive read on store bought manure i may be able to help. manure from a store is going to be different from region to region based on what the cattle are eating. that being said "black kow" from TX may be ok while the same brand name stuff from TN may be absolute crap and kill your myc. so its all up in the air... the only way to find out is to try it. most people around here seem to agree that hpoo is best for shroom growing for many reasons. i think one reason cow poo is not as good in many peoples opinion is because cows have 4 stomachs (its really just one with 4 chambers)...im reasonably sure that horses have just 1 big stomach, so the foods are less digested and leave more nutrient behind in the poo (although this is just a theory of mine, but it may be true, if anyone knows for sure please inform me) go to yahoo yellow pages...put in your zip code and search for "stables" or "horse stables", find one near you and go to it, ask them for some horse manure. they will most likely let you have all you want for free, just tell em its for your flower bed. that'll save you a few bucks and be a better substrate to boot

I live in the city and don't have the time to make a trip to any stables thats why I wanna use store bought manure.

by all means give it a shot...all im saying is it wouldnt be the optimal substrate. it may not be well composted either. i would rinse it a couple times and let it dry out before you pasteurize it first to make sure its leached out and mix it with pasteurized wheat straw

Yea!
Some bagged manure is awful. Some bagged manure will work. You can't know if a specific brand will produce unless you test first. I did this with 6 brands, and used the best one in a large grow. The same size grow with straw alone would have given better results.

Yea I think I might just do it pure straw instead of wasting time with store bought "shit"
