iv got a couple of questions for all you grow experts..... ive got a PF cake that is like 99% colonized, there is one small spot that wont colonize on the bottom for some reason..... the cake looks very healthy and in the wait for tha last spot to colonize i got some contamination. a very tiny spec of balck contam has appeared on the side of my cake. i noticed it about 4 days ago and it hasnt grown, actually myc seems to be groing on it! thats what makes me belive its a healthy cake. any advise on what i should do with this cake?
my second question is much less complex, i wish to make substarate with bird seed. does WBS, stand for wild bird seed? can any kind of bird seed mix work? ive seen in the teks on this site that people leave the seeds whole... is it ok to powder them? thanks!!!

Be careful when choosing your WBS and make certain the back lists no fungicides, if it does you will get 0 growth. Also be sure to either use a trusted Simmer TEK (ala Foomanshroom's) or a good Soak TEK (ala Agar's final answer to soaking)
WBS is a bitch, and can be a pain in the ass in regards to water content, but if you pay attention to what you are doing and what is going on, you shoudl be fine, I was my first time with WBS.

so bird seed is easy to contaminate huh.... i kinda fiqured. right now im only using PF cakes, and PF cakes swpaned to 50/50 casing. i want to find a way to increase potency so i was thinking of another kind of substrate. last night i noticed a bunch of mixed bird seed bags at the dollar store and was thinking.. hmmmm only a dollar, why not try it. so here i am asking questions again. ive checkout out some of the teks but wasnt sure about them, english is my second language....

i would give it some more time to finish colonizing the last little spot...uncolonized substrate is asking for more contam...if the one spot you think was contam is taken over by myc then i doubt it would hurt anything...dont birth till its fully colonized.

WBS does stand for wild bird seed. any kind should work as long as its free of fungicides (it will say on the package if it includes fungicide from my experience). dont powder it leave it whole (soak in water 24hrs, simmer 20-30min or untill you see a ONLY a couple of popped grains, load jars half-way or 5/8, then pc (pressure cook) for 1.25 hrs they MUST be pcd otherwise they Will contam, cool for 24hrs then inoculate. good luck

WBS is great for spawning to bulk substrates, but if you're going to fruit directly from grains, stick with rye berries if you can find them.

Not at all, its just hard to judge the moisture content of it when you start, I made a couple jars days before I started to see what varying methods yielded for water content, and found the one ideal for my stove and my bird seed. If its too wet you get wetspot if its too dry they stall, thats the pain in the ass, just follow your TEK To The Letter, and you will be fine.
