Moved - Anyone seen Salvia Plants in New Zealand?
    #5481579 - 04/05/06 04:10 AM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Looking for some salvia cuttings here in New Zealand, I know its round but is anyone keeping any? I dont need much - say one cutting.

I know a dude who has a whole lab setup he pretty much built himself - just waiting on the laminar flow hood. He's also got a 1000x microscope with a video camera attached!!!
We are thinking of doing some tissue culturing and making a whole bunch of cloned salvias.
Anyone heard of doing this before? I was wandering if somaclonal variation would happen easily? (since it spreads almost totally vegatitivly I'm geussing it wouldnt - but who knows?)
Learning some cool techniques in my plant biotech class - protoplast fusion would be a cool thing to try. Perhaps salvia crossed with some other sage.
So does anyone know any good links on salvia in vitro culture? I have only just leared about all of this stuff - heaps of exciting things you can do.

you can always try to order from europe, i belive salvia is illegal in australia? travellersgarden is a nice shroomery sponsor to mention one, i would think it survive the trip but maybe there is some strict rules on importing plants from overseas in case of pest and plant diseases. maybe get import permit if salvia is legal to have in new zealand.

Yeah it is legal - but getting it in with customs is expensive and a bloody hassle. I know it's here - I had some cuttings but they died :frown: I wasnt ready to look after them - they did ok to start with but when I moved back to uni the cold got to them.
