it's also important to attach a positive feeling to not smoking... feel pride and satisfaction about it! insted of getting bummed about not being able to follow the instinct to smoke...

I gave up smoking four years ago. I was chewing gum for a year or so and then realised I was addicted to the gum.

Cold turkey is the only way - you feel pretty shitty for a few weeks but gradually start to feel the benefits until you wonder why you ever enjoyed smoking in comparison to having clear lungs and more energy.

Most people who do it cold turkey never smoke again - you just don't want to go through the sleepless nights and cravings again.

ive tried cold turkey numerous times , the longest it lasted was about a month or so then i went to chicago and u can smoke in the bars thier so i couldnt pass the chance up. =)

and in response to "The actual addiction/withdrawal isn't that bad, rather minor. It's more of a mental thing."

I hear heroin and nicotine addicts being compared to each other all the time. Then again, i dunno how valid their comparison is in terms of addiction. The addiction/with drawl is not breezey though. It's no detox but i mean it's definitely hard.

Well, I've never been addicted to heroin.. but I hear the withdrawal is nothing short of downright nasty. Nicotine may be as easy to get addicted to as heroin... but the withdrawal sure isn't anything close.

When I went to jail I was forced to quit smoking, had no choice. I went from smoking about a pack and a half a day.. to zero a day. I had been smoking for about 8 years up to that point. The worst part was for the first week, I felt a little irritable. There was no cold sweats, or agony, or puking. I definitely psychologically craved the physical act of smoking moreso than my body craved the actual nicotine. But after a few days of not smoking, the physical addiction was pretty much gone. After a week, I forget all about it. Two or three weeks, and you can consider yourself successfully "clean". My only problem was that I never wanted to quit.. so I started back up as soon as I got out.

I've heard good things about 'wellbutrin'.. being a mild anti-depressant, but also very helpful in curbing nicotine cravings in people who are trying to quit.

i've found chewing on licorice root when you have the urge to smoke can help calm the psychological addiction.

then again, i've never quit successfully

Yup..you realize cigarettes are pretty much pacifiers for adults. Its not just the physical addiction, but the mental. Its like breaking the biggest habit you've ever had.

Another thing to help is substituting the cigarette...with licorice/similar things. The with drawl isn't that bad if you trick yourself into thinking your smoking.

i just started my 2nd job,
but once my job routines/comfort/confidence becomes norm,
im going to quit.
the n00byness at this new workplace is a little nerveracking.
when im working my normal night job,
i dont care for cigs at all.
its the down time that get me.

so yeah, i know i cant quit right now,
but in a month i will take on this challenge.
i absolutely hate cigs now. theyre discusting
8 years of smoking and i can feel the gunk in my lungs getting thicker.
if i knew what i was getting into, i wouldnt of started.
im 4 months sober, & eventually i want to be caffiene (coffee) & cig free.
i want to run on my own chemicals for a change dammit. =)
