I went to about 10 different places today picking up various supplies to start my first grow, and the only vermiculite I could find was very fine it seems compaired to pictures Ive seen here, could this be substituted for course verm or do I just need to look harder? also; peat moss, is the peat everyone uses here really fine too? kinda like potting soil? and if you use peat as opposed to coco coir you need calcium carbonate to adjust the ph? one last thing... H2o2 is ydrogen peroxide... right? thanks!

fine grade verm is ok... that's all that i use... i don't like peat, i use coir instead.. the corse verm is optimal but the fine verm works well too.

1. Yes, chunky verm is preferrable, but fine will work. It just has a tendency to clump together extending colonization time.
2. Peat moss is pretty much peat moss, unless it contains additives. I was surprised just how finely it's ground the first time I used it.
3. Yes, you will need something to balance out your PH level. I use crushed/powdered oyster shells. Works great.
4. Yes, H2O2 is hydrogen peroxide. Just buy the 3% solution that comes in the brown jug (usually).

Peat is the main ingredient in potting soil, I personally buy potting soil instead of straight peat.

Thanks guys, Ill try a few more places and try and find some corse verm. but if I cant find any at least I know where to find the fine stuff. If I did use potting soil insted of peat would I still need oyster shells to adjust the ph? also I have been wondering, can I grind up some penningtons WBS and use that insted of BRF? that would seem alot more suitable in terms of nutes. but I dont know if fine verm and wbs flour is something i should try my first grow thanks!

Well, I use potting soil because I've read you don't need to adjust the ph, but I've never tested and don't really know. I add crushed oyster shells and some calcium carbonate to all my casings because I've read that calcium carbonate can't really take the ph to any dangerous levels like hydrated lime can. I figure better safe than sorry... I just buy some calcium carbonate at the petsmart and mix a bit in. It's relatively inexpensive, and apparantly can only do good for a casing mix.
When it comes to ph stuff, I've only read about it and have never done any testing so don't feel comfortable giving advice about it.
