ANOTHER wbs question

last time i pc'd wild bird seed the end product came out much too dry. Here is what I did: - soaked the wbs for over 48 hours - i drained it and forgot about it for 3 or 4 hours - filled each jar 1/2 full - pc'd 75 minutes I think by letting the stuff sit out too long it dried up. Can this be a problem? Everyone says, "ebass, ebass, you'll save time if you skip the simmering". Thanks for the advice but I screwed it up somehow. The time before that I soaked for 24 hours and simmer for 20 min while stirring constantly, keeping a close eye on the seeds for popping. Stuff came out great.

It depends how dried out it is... it can be a problem, but they can colonize some pretty dry substrates. If you aren't using the WBS to spawn a bulk substrate, your flushes will probably be alot smaller than if the WBS was properly hydrated... I personally skip the soaking and just simmer for about an hour then rinse, let sit for about 10 minutes, then load into the jars. Saves alot more time than skipping the simmering after a soak.

You must simmer. That is the point where the wbs gets its moisture content. 30-45 minutes.

I think alot of people just do one or the other... I know I never soak. I've read alot people saying they don't simmer... both methods seem to work fine.

Try simmering for 30 minutes to an hour and skipping the soak. Why soak for hours when you can be completely done with your jars in about 2?

The failsafe method that is recommended highly by Psyconaught: Not invented, implemented.)
KayTEE brand, Bird seed is fungicide free and very nicely blended.
Soak WBS for 18 hours.
Drain WBS for 15 minutes.
Fill jars 1/2 - 3/5 full of WBS.
Cover jar with Tyvek, Polly-fill/Lid.
PC jars for 90 minutes at 15psi.
Inoculate.
Incubate.

I agree. I never pre-soak. Just an extra, unneccessary step. Honestly, I really don't even simmer. I STEEP the grain in coffee-hot water for a little over an hour. Very few exploded grains, and the grains are at max water capacity. What's the pre-soak for really? Germinating endospores? If you're PCing properly, they're not a concern.
