Experiment: Tyvek As Pasteurizing Bag || Conclusion: False
    #5480399 - 04/04/06 08:00 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Well, I didn't think it would work and I just proved it to myself. I thought about using our trusty TYVEK envelopes as pasteurizing bags in stead of the plastic ones from ULINE, which are cheap, yet expensive or the oven bags that are 60 cents a pop.

Conclusion: The tyvek bags DO repel and hold water, BUT the way they are sealed, they leak and allow water into the bag.

I experimented as follows:

Filled up a bag with paper towels, and potting soil (to simulate poo). The paper towels were to see how MUCH water was let in.

Closed the bag the same way you do with plastic ones. Rubber band.

Using FooManShroom's method of the cooler. I submerged the bag into the tub under the 170 degree water and let it set for about 45 minutes for experimentation purposes.

Immediately, I saw bubbles coming from the corners of the bag. NOT a good sign. Alas, I waited.

After the 45 minutes were up, I dumped out the bag. UG....paper towels were soaked, and the bottom half of the soil was wet as well.

Conclusion: These will probably work using some OTHER form of pasturization, but dunking them in water is not good.

Good luck!
