Alright, there has to be some guys in the forums that are in to car audio!
I know that I commute enough to warrent a good system to listen to on/to work...and Its a nice thing to have when you're as permafried as me
SO...I had this 12" Alpine Type-R sub in a plexiglass enclosure (yeah it has mirrors on the bottom/back to "see" the pretty woofer..) anyway, It was only a single voice coil at 4ohms...I was pulling a reasonable 4ohms then from my Alpine MRD-500, at 200RMS watts and 500peak...
WELL, I got a good deal on a DUAL voice coil 12" Type-R (under 100$) and just wired it up and swaped subs. OH MAN! I think my brain was sloshing about in my head. This settup now lets me run a 2ohm load, witch bumps my wattage up to 500watts RMS, and 900 watts peak!!!!
This is insane, I have a new deck arriving tomarrow to replace my 6-year old Alpine that dosen't like burned CDs anymore, and has stuck buttons
This new deck, I got online used is a 2004 CDA-9831...with the 4v pre-outs and the motorized face. I've never had such nice shit in my car before...and since I got it used...it was hella cheap! I've already got aftermarket speakers...just need a 4 channel amp now and I'll be set...
Moral: Dual voice coil subs are WORTH any extra money! I can finally unleash my amps potential after 3 long years!!!

The number of coils is nothing but a configuration options you sillyass. IF you had bought the right sub the first time to match your amp you would have been set!

P.S. Your main stage is more important then your subwoofer.

Oh man, Shpongle sounds SICK in my car already...I can't imagine with all the crossovers, sub level conrtol, and digital time correction settings I'll have to play with when I pick up my deck tonight (it came!!)...So I'll be able to make my highs clearer, and the bass tighter...mmmm

I've been listening to the new One Session cd latley w/DJ Bobby B from the Kottomouth Kings...it's pretty good actually.
I have a sealed box so it isn't nearly as loud as it could be, but it's so much punchier and cleaner sounding.

Is your system worth more than the car?

I have a friend with a car audio shop in Athens who set me up real nice, I don't know a damn thing about specifics but I got a Bostwick amp and two 12' Sony Xplod subs with a custom box at cost.
To be honest, i put the system in my truck exclusively for Rage Against the Machine, and it was worth every penny.

Damn guys...it got even better!!!
I upgraded my head unit...took out my Alpine CDM-7854...shit was made in 2000, didn't have MP3 and barley read any cd-r's. It was starting to fall appart. It only had ONE pre-out, no EQ...just bass/sub/trebble settings...
I put in a 2004 CDA-9831...now this thing KICKS! The 4V pre-outs hooked up to my amp make my sub pound so much better. The built-in high/low pass crossovers really help get rid of tons of distortion in my highs...I like the 4-part parametric EQ...it's like an itunes or winamp EQ with the frequency's...haha once i figured that out I just copied some of my itunes presets in there...shit worked!
I haven't even messed w/the time-correction settings yet...that's going to be a bitch. I guess I have to measure the distance between me and all my speakers.
The motorized face kicks so much ass. It's like having the transformer soundwave in my dash. It remembers it's position when you eject a disk or start the car...and it'll even retract 30 seconds after i turn the car off on it's own...it's so freaking badass for me to watch compared to my lame, lame, 6-year old, low-end Alpine that was starting to fall appart.
I had no idea how much better my speakers could sound with the xovers...im thinking of getting a 4 channel amp and some front components now!! :P
