Is it contamination?

Two of my PF jars (brf + verm) were dropped accidentally the day after innoculation. Unfortunately the lids were not on tight enough, and fell off. The dry verm layer completely spilled out of both jars. I threw the lids back on as fast as I could, hoping that nothing happened to get in. Next day there was no change in the two jars. Today (two days after the accident) both jars have a nasty smell to them. Hard to describe. Almost like rotting apples (bacilis?). There is no visible sign of contamination that I can see, although in one of the two jars there is a beige wet spot at the bottom of the jar, but I think it was there to begin with (a couple jars had a little too much water in them). I'll try and get pics up later today of the wet spot and the jars in general. Until then, does this sound like contamination? All of the other jars still have a distinct earthy smell to them (good, right?). It's just the two that were dropped with the smells.

Bah. Sorry but no pictures. The wet spots look kind of like milk (pasty white?). Could they just be excess water? I know that I put a little too much water in a couple of the jars, so I'm hoping that it's only water. If it isn't water: what contam is it most likely to be and what should I do about it? Yeah, I could just toss them, I suppose. Would it be safe if I just left them for a few more days to watch what happens? I've already isolated the two jars with the smell away from the other jars to avoid spreading any contamination.

Ok, so that's 2 jars down. What about the "wet spots"? Some of the other jars have similar wet spots in them, but don't smell AT ALL foul (just that earthy/grainy smell). Is it just too much water collecting in the bottom, or is it something bad?

just water collecting. Check the amounts of water you use in your substrates, could be a little too much.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I put a little too much in a few of the jars, which are probably the ones with the water collecting in the bottom. At any rate, the water spots appear to be getting smaller so hopefully everything will work out.

should be ok...usually if youve used way too much water in your jars, the mycelium just wont colonize the botom portion. Since youve already birthed them it should be alright.

i'm confused when did he say he birthed them? so did you put another dry verm layer on top or just put the lids back on asap? i would say those jars have about a snowball's chance in hell of not contaminating .. sorry

No I haven't birthed them yet. And no, I just slapped the lids back on right away. I'm not counting on those two jars surviving.

Sounds like wet spot to me. Two jars down at the start isn't as bad as two jars down after two months.
