A few beginner questions and yes I did read the FAQS

I've never grown mushrooms but I have cultured fungus and bacteria on different types of agar before. I've also grown plants. I've read the fAQS but can't find much on making fruiting chambers. I've seen what they are for and what they do but havn't seen much as far as blue prints. If I missed something can someone direct me to a link? Also, how do you humidify an incubator? I've read about using perlite or some kind of humidifying device in a fruiting chamber. Is it he same for an incubator. Are bowls of water fine?-using water surface area to dictate the humidity? I've incubated chicken eggs and I used water surface area and ventilation to set the humidity. BTW I plan on using rye or wbs and some kind of casing method. I also wanted to know about "fanning". I assume this is for air exchange but I havn't found what anybody actually does.

IMO, u dont need humidifier for incubator, get a TIT ( tub in tub ) with a fish tank heater at the bottom, works well. http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/7961 & Yes, u need air exchange (FAE) when fruiting, you can hand fan it 2-3 times a day or install a fan, cool mist on your fruiting chamber.
Welcome to shroomery & Good Luck ~

Here are a few teks on incubators, 2 are TIT's (Tub-in-tub). You can do the same for a fruiting chamber except you will need humidity (incubators do not require humidity, only heat).
You can provide humidity several ways. Id suggest just buying a bag of Perlite at your local garden store (Home-depot has it, prob Walmart and Kmart also), or a Shroomery sponsor.
Fill a small bowl with it and pour it into a strainer, rinse thuroughly under water (distilled if u want to be extra sterile, which is a good idea), then pour it back into the bowl. Add a small amount of H2O2 (Hydrogen Peroxide) to the bowl, mix it around, strain again if needed - add it to your FC.
This should provide a high amount of humidity, which is ideal for cakes
For air exchange, just open the FC and fan it several times a day - it reduces CO2 build up, which will stunt mushroom growth. There are alternative methods (a cool-mist i believe? which also provides humidity) but im not farmiliar with them.
Good luck

Won't fanning increase the chances of contamination? Thanks for the help!

I've just read the double tub tek. Will a tub with a lid and poly-fill stuffed holes work well for a fruiting chamber? Being a beginner I don't know if my questions are dumb or not. Please be patient. Basically I want to use wbs or rye as a substrate in a styrofoam cooler with an aquarium heater, then case in a tub with poly fill stuffed holes for air exchange. Sound good? Am I missing anything? thanks again for any help and patience with a noobie.

Have you searched the forum yet? There's a link to the right of where it says Welcome, yourname. Search for martha/greenhouse/fruiting chamber/double tub. That will give you plenty. Also at the bottom of the page is related links.

A double/mono tub is intended to be used with straw and/or horse manure, not WBS and rye. Exercise the same patience that you want us to have and READ. Everything you need to know is here, you just need to take the time to look for it. The FAQ's aren't the only place to find information. Check out The Mushroom Cultivation Archive.

I am reading and asking questions and will continue to do both. I have read all of the double tub tek and I realize the guy that wrote it is using horse shit. I'm not interested in the technique as much as I am interested in the construction of the box. It seemed really simple and easy to do where as I have see other boxes using humidifying devices and heaters. Maybe there should be a beginners section on this forum but there is not. Thanks to you guys who are helping. If you don't want to help me than don't read or post. It clearly says in my subject title that I am a beginner to make it easier for those of you who don't like beginner questions.

I kind of sense a bit of anger coming from you. I actually did offer some help, so I'm not sure WTF you seem mad about. You said you read the double tub tek and wondered if it works good as a fruiting chamber. If you really read it, then you'd know it DOES. I'm glad you re-read it to get some clarification. I'm not telling you not to ask questions, but when you make statements like:
Quote:

it gives the impression that you sort of skimmed through everything and the "Sound good? Am I missing anything?" shows that you're really just asking for someone to explain it for you. All of the teks you touched on work fine. Read them CAREFULLY.

I have to add here that if we gleefully answered every half ass question this forum would fill up with idiots real fast. No one should post in this forum until they've read the entire grow section a few times. Then search first. Your questions have been answered literally hundreds of times.

No Anger really. You just sounded irritated so I pointed out that it was clear in my subject I was a beginner. It's not as if I asked "how do I grow mushrooms?" No I asked specific questions as clarifications to what I had read. It will take me along time before I can get to every single word in the FAQs. But I have done alot of reading there. I belong to an mj cultivation site. I grew for years. I stopped a couple of years ago but I still post advice. Everytime someone asks me if they can grow weed with human poo I tell them no and explain why. I have no problems with answering the same questions over and over again. I searched for fruiting chambers on this sites search function and it came up with nothing useful. I searched in only the FAQ section and the search did not come up with the fruiting chamber section in the faqs. Not until someone in this thread posted a link to it did I find it. Maybe it has gone unnoticed that there are tons of categories and sub-categories. Here is a question for instance that is not answered in the FAQS-Does the horse poo stink the house up when you pasteurize it in the oven? For how long? Really I need an answer.

Actually your easy poo pasturization was helpful. Of course cow manure is easier to come by.

Cow manure doesn't work as well. If you go that route, chop it up well and mix it with some shredded wheat straw.

What I do is use both methods in my sig. I inoculate my WBS with a liquid culture, spawn that WBS to my pastuerized h/poo, then throw it in a small double tub. These methods Work great and consistently for me and they are far cheaper and easier then most of the methods I often see around here.

I think I will try your method. 3 questions though. When you change burners after the water boils are you changing to a burner that is off or boiling for another hour? And what is your ratio of spawn to h/poo? Or does it matter? Then just follow the double tub tek?

I have electric burners. I move the pot because they stay hot for awhile after you turn off the heat and the high temp can cause more bursted grains. This may just be my imagination, but I always do it.
Quote:

I usually do a 1:4- 1:3 ratio spawn to poo, but the general consensus is 1:5. The more you put, the faster it will colonize.

IMO, it doesn't get any easier then that.

Is fresh horse manure good? Or should it be more seasoned? Hey thanks for the answers. You've been really helpful.

No, you want aged poo. You want the stuff that looks almost white and has no piss smell to it. The piss smell is ammonia and it will inhibit growth.

Click up top where it says "Mushroom Cultivation". At the top of the cultivation forum, it will say "mushroom cultivation archive". Below that, click where it says "boxes". You will get just about every fruiting chamber there is.

I'm not doing this over again.
I already stated how I do it in this thread. IMO it's one of the easiest ways.
