Need Some 60/40 Tek Clarifications

Hi! I'm gonna do my first casing tek, 60/40 Verm/Coir, and wanted a little advice / clarification on a few points. I'm beginning with BR & Verm cakes. If I crumble them up in zip-type baggies, should they stay in the baggie for a while to recover? If so, how long, approximately? Should I be looking to see that everything is "white" on the outside again?
I'm going to pick up some crushed oyster shell, and although it's difficult to tell from the picture since I don't know the magnification (if any), it looks kinda coarse. http://www.andfeathers.com/shop/vitamins.html - it's at the bottom third of the page, or search for the text, "crushed oyster shell". Is that ok, or do I need to powder it more? Also, since I don't have litmus paper, (and this stuff is "slow release" anyhow, right?), about how much should I use? I don't know if coir ph varies much like peat, but fwiw, I'm using Coco Tek brand coir. Thanks in advance for your help!

The 60/40 mix is usually used as the casing layer. Sounds like you are trying to spawn to it for your substrate layer? ? For substrate just use pz'd hpoo mixed with coir and spawn to that.

first, no they should not recover in the baggies, you want to spawn them to your substrate and then case. if you aren't spawning to poo or something else, just lay as even as possible and then an even casing layer.
second, the oyseter shell will only be effective if it is crushed into a fine powder. you won't have to use much since coir and verm are pretty ph neutral, my guess is about 10-15% should be calcium for the long term buffer. hope this helps

The coir I get runs from 5.2 to 6.5 PH. That's not much different from peat. I recommend a teaspoon of hydrated garden lime per cup of coir or peat(don't count the verm when determining how much lime to use). Be sure to mix the lime into the dry ingredients, then add the water. I also recommend gypsum at the rate of a tablespoon per cup of peat or coir. RR

Right, I'm not spawning to a substrate. So just crumble, spread, and case immediately? Why wouldn't you want to let it recover a bit before spreading it?

So it all has to be crushed to powder? Shouldn't some remain a bit coarse in order to work long-term?

Gypsum in addition to, or in place of, oyster shell? btw, the coir I have claims to be ph neutral.
