I'm Just Generally Unwanted

When home for Christmas, my mom informed me that I was no longer on the left. This was confirmed by close to a dozen democrat/green friends and relatives whose opinions I sought. So when I came back down state, I had a go at belonging to the right. But it didn't work out. I would join in a political conversation and voice my (honest) views that the federal government should be smaller, taxes should be much lower, capitalism should be reasonably respected, criminals should serve long and hard sentences, gun ownership should be a respected right, etc. I threw scathing insults at Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, Howard Dean and Jesse Jackson. I thought everything seemed cool. But any young republicans present wouldn't have me. They looked at me strange and seemed to go out of their way to make me out to be leftist.
So people from either side don't like me, which is fine. But it's made me wonder two things.
None of these people (not even my own family) payed much attention to the issues where I agreed with them. Instead, they made sure to pay close attention to the points where we disagreed, immediately commenting, when they had been silent up till then. I don't think any other topic, not music, not food, not science, draws the contrarian out of people the way politics does. What is it about politics that makes us so negative?
How is it that these republicans were able to see right through the words coming out of my mouth? When someone walks into a room, can you tell their opinions on history or television shows? Why is it so easy with politics? Why do the stereotypes fit so well?

Why choose a side? Politics suck anyways and are extremely boring and are just a bunch of old grey haired loafs blabbing about hogwash.
Be a Republicrat.

I agree 100% with that statement. Should I be worried?

Good one.
If one were to consider themselves the sole member of a group, then by definition he would always agree with that group 100%, unless your schizophrenic.

Thats because you're espousing conservative values. Unfortunately, most young republicans I've met are neo-cons "fascists IMHO but each to his own". Neo-conservative politics and conservative politics tend not to mix well in practice.
BTW AKSE, that mindset is exactly why our govt. and every govt. throughout time ends up screwing the populace. The price of freedom is eternal vigilance, even and especially against our own "leaders".

Gijith, it sounds like you are in need of www.freedomainradio.com
...for more than just figuring out politics. it sounds like you have some family issues to work out as well.

This is a very good point, I think. Debate has become all about what club your in, when it could be so much different. Both Dems and Republicans spend much of their campaigns arguing about issues that they will never really deal with in office, like abortion or gay marriage, and this just pushes voters into these two clubs. I won't even call them poles because I think that is part of the myth, that there are two sides. In fact there are an infinite number of sides.
Anyway I think it is positive that you aren't fitting neatly into either category. I only hope one day there is enough diversity in political thought that we can breathe some flexability back into the political system.

People, people, ignore the frowning face on the thread. I'm happy and in good health. I was just wondering about the two questions I had thought up.
Rono, I wish I had dreadlocks. With Overgrow down and out, the Shroomery must have more dreads than any other site now.
