Casing notes and lessons learned...pics

Well... the first time i cased, this happened.
mad overlay fallowed which turned into this(i hate patching)
I got a a half Oz from 5 1/2pints. I was pleased for my first grow but not good enough..tons of overlay and dead shrooms. I have now grown a bunch and have learned somethigs...
Here are the first knotts forming on the MYC on the casing of my last grow.
NOT on the brown uncolonized coco/verm case. The areas of MYC popping up soon formed into clusters of fruits.
I leanred that the whole case needs to have this in equal amounts on the whole thing. I find this hard, so i dropped the temp to 78. It slows things down but I have better control over the colonizing MYC. These are my new casings.. Hawaiian This is B+
Im a n00b but im getting better. I try to make the substrate level as equal as i can, same with the saming(only about 1-1.5inches of sub. less then halfinch of casing. I also try to break up my cakes the best i can. are their any way that can really chomp the cakes up..would it be safe to toss in my grinder???

I would suggest, taking your casing mix, and throw in about 30-50% peat moss (with 5% oyster shell powder added to it first). That would help. Using the lower temp is an excellent choice too. Also, do not be afraid to have an uneven surface. The casing layer needs to be even with the substrate, not level to the ground. There will always be a few bumps. You can see the dense balls of mycelium in certain areas, if you sprinkle casing mix onto the middle of those to cover them up slightly (the thicker areas), then you even everything up. If you dont want to patch, you can use a clean fork, and gently use it to spread the casing mix from the areas where theres more casing mix, to the areas where theres more mycelium. Dont scratch deep into the surface, just use the fork to move the casing mix around.

OMG could you take photos doing casing and quantities used of mycelium casing mix and everything you did to have that quality of shrooms ... by the way what strain of shrooms are those?EQ?

haha taken out of context that's a pretty silly sentence
joking aside i know what you mean, and that's a valuable observation and you're dead on correct... its really the key to the pinset.
of course understanding it and doing it are two different things but you'll get the hang of that... its a lot to do with observing the rate it's going (since no two grows seem to go the same) and knowing just when to initiate fruiting to slow that mycelial growth, so the end result "equal amounts on the whole thing"
and sure, you can chop up cakes to get the pieces finer... i know some people use cheese graters. i was never a fan of that and left them chunkier, you can still get it pretty flat and level by LIGHTLY packing the chunks in to even it out. allow them to recover and stitch together BEFORE applying your casing layer, only takes about 2-3 days for the larger chunks, i might allow some extra time for a finer grated up cake to recover and re-combine... a "unified" substrate performs best, so give it that head start to recovery before casing if you aren't already... so its crumble->wait->case->wait->fruit... time the "waits" right and you got yourself a killer pinset
