For seeds use an equal portion of perlite, vermiculite, and coir.
It is perfect and dont worry about not having enough nutes, they will be fine for a good while in that mix.
And use the growth parameters I said above. Also keep them in a humid environment. A good idea is to put the pot in quart/gallon bags or use a seed starter tray.
Do not cover the seed it must recieve light and moisture to germinate.

i use coral reef sand aka tropical ciclid tank bottom. Made of dead coral digested by parot fishes, mixed with perelite and some potting soild i use for my other plants.
Dries fast, looks good, and no organic matter to harbor fungi and other pests while in a high humidity enviroment.
All in all use what ever you like

Do you grow them the same way?
I use the black take-out trays with clear lids. I also like to have them all packed together nice and cumfy close. That helps them hold each other up.
But i have to say after 50 to 70 seedlings a year ago im about down to 15 or so nice strong specimens.
All i know is that they all like lots of humidity and the soil i use.

Good question
Are you asking like whats too hot or too cold or too wet?
Eather way i dried out all my seedlings under 6 months old at one point. They all turned dark dark green brown, shrivled up to what looked like nasty boogers.
I misted them and after a couple days of moisture and humidity they all inflated back to normal. Some died off but i figure if some died thats a good thing i dont have room for any weaklings.

Yeah thats pretty much what we all do. Humid environment, warm pourous soil.
Also the saran wrap over the pot and rubberband seal is good for puting your adult cacti outside too because it protects them from nasty insects.

I like the black take out trays with the clear poly tops, makes checkin on them a snap. It alows for plenty of growth.
