coffee filter lids...how to inoculate?

I've read a little about putting a coffee filter under the screw on lid, so that the filter is the actual lid. If you do this, do you need to put a 1/2" verm layer on the top? How do you inoculate the jar? If you poked the syringe through, how could you recover the holes?

What method are you planning to use? Brown rice type of method or whole grains like WBS/Rye/Corn?

Id say, yeah keep the verm layer on the top.
Just stick the needle in and inoculate away.
Put another coffee filter over it

You read wrong,read again

A coffee filter is used for nothing more then a DUST cover . It has absolutely no use as a barrier against contaminates(spores in the air). It is way to porous to keep them out.
Besides, if that was all you used as a lid, your substrate would dry out in no time.

I'm not experienced with BR at all..
With my WBS I've made jars successfully 2 ways:
1) 3/8" hole in center if lid. Stuff with polyfill so the 'grain' of the polyfill is parallel with the top of the lid. Use a pencil eraser or pen to push the polyfil into the hole. Put flat lid piece onto jar that has the substrate in it. Place a triple layer of coffee filters over that. Screw ring on over coffee filters. Trim excess coffee filter away from jar. Put a piece of A-foil over the top of jar. PC, let cool, and inoculate through the A-foil. Then wrap another piece of A-foil over the top of the first one. Lightly grasp both layers of A-foil and lift upwards about an inch. Never completely removing the A-foil off of the jar and exposing the filter to the open air. Then release and let the weight of the A-foil fall on the jar. This allows air to go under the A-foil and into the air exchange, but keeps contams from landing ON the filter material.
2. Drill 3/8" hole in center of flat lid piece. Place a strip of micropore tape over the hole. Place this prepared lid onto a jar of substrate spawn. Install ring. PC, let cool, inoculate. Place another strip of micropore tape crossways over the existing hole. Incubate in THOROUGHLY CLEANED incubator.
Method #2 is MUCH simpler and has less waste materials from the proccess. Micropore tape just kicks some serious ass..I suggest every aspiring mycologist get some!
Hope that helps!
