New Zealand Amanita variety?

Hey fellow hunters! I was out for a walk in my local park yesterday when I saw several brightly coloured mushrooms a few metres away, poking out of fallen pine needles. I've been searching the shroomery and erowid.org for more information on what could be amanita muscaria, but havent found anything conclusive as of yet. Any help would be much appreciated! Cheers
Habitat: - West Auckland, New Zealand - Parklands, pine and native bush - growing on pine needles and dead plant matter - located near a water runoff, very damp
Gills: - white/cream color - semi-attached - crowded
Stem: - approximately 8cm long - approximately 1cm diameter - white/cream color - sticky to the touch, smooth upon drying - solid stem, yet fibrous - bulbous near roots
Cap: - approximately 8cm in diameter - colored red, fading to orange edges - flat, with a mild concave - covered in white flecks, which can be removed

Yusssss! This is also my first post!

Thanks bluemeanie
That would make it psychoactive, but not psychedelic like the psilocybe varieties, correct?

so this species is definately Muscaria if it's not white or yellow cap etc
I read about the poisonous amanitas, and the PICS looked nothing like the thousands of amanitas I found in my local pine forest, so just to be safe I threw away about 30 healthy fresh amanitas that looked exactly or very much alike that pic there???
Tell me it isn't true... tell me I didn't throw away the non-poisonous (in the sense of deadly amanitas... you know what I mean) amanitas?
I wasn't sure, but didn't want to take the risk.
Damn

Yeah they were literally every 5 metres in any direction in the pines

I cooked the above amanita for 2 hours at a low heat in the oven till it was just bordering on being crispy. I then ground it up with a mortar and pestle till it was a fine powder, which I then brewed in boiling water for about 30 mins. The dosage was far less than minimum (just to be on the safe side), and within an hour I was experiencing minor muscle twitches, and visual disturbances ('fogging' of my vision and blurred surroundings).
The weather is getting colder and wetter down under, and it shouldnt be longer than a month or so till proper psychedelics are sprouting up all over the place. Looking forward to it!

I didn't have very accurate weighing equipment, but I made the tea from 1 fairly big cap. A couple of grams perhaps?

Ive got friends who say its the shit - in terms of being pretty damn fun. Then again others say its a total non-event. But atleast its recyclable - most of the actives arent metabolised so if you drink your urine you will have another crack at it. Raindeer used to do this to each other - and there is a huge amount of history with norse and celtic use of this mushroom. Most of the poisonous amanitas look quite different - but i guess if you get the wrong one you will die of liver/kidney failure... Amanitas are pretty common - and usually arrive around four weeks before the subs - although its give and take in reality.

Well they're fairly plentiful in my local park, and it would be interesting to find out more about the psychoactive experience, or 'trip' if you can call it that. I'd like to slowly work my dosage up from a few grams to about 20 grams (this seems to be the most commonly reported upper dosage limit, although you could go even higher). Will post a trip report sometime, along with preparation tips if anybody is interested..

I've tried them a couple of times - if its red with white spots and is a toadstool - as far as I have found there is nothing close to matching this description. The smell of them cooking makes me want to spew - the first time I cooked them this wasnt the case. After getting them down only to spew them back out again my brain has obviously associated the two together.
I didnt trip but my friends had some crazy times, on one occasion they started talked gibberish to each other and seeing fireworks everywhere. Another of my friends traveled to the future, and saw himself spewing, and so asked for a bucket. His prophacy came true
Hope yours go ok, they seem to polarise the opinoins of the people who take them, some love it, and me I just hate the taste.

Lol yeah I know - after spewing out my pink amanita and pasta dinner over the balcony. The time they were talking gibberish I spewed out the car window and got the car behind us as we were going over a bridge haha.
Or did you mean am I sure I correctly identified it? As far as misidentification goes - I think amnitas have gotta be one of the easiest shroom species to identify, I havent heard of anything that comes close, but I'm also aware that with eating mushrooms you should always be careful, you dont want people to be blas? about identification.

Damn you nailed that one right on the head! The smell of them cooking is one to retch even the most hardened stomachs. How do you and your mates go about preparing them for consumption?
