When do we cease to exist?
    #5476241 - 04/03/06 07:36 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

When we physically die?

When the memory of us fades from others?

I vote the later, though it's a bit of a stretch

Simple, "you" never existed, so you can never cease to exist.

Making the noise "penicillin" is no substitute for actually taking penicillin.

Do tell

Do you mean only the individual is absolutely sure of its existence?

I mean that individuality is an illusion. Separateness, duality, and differentiation are all part of the Grand Illusion called Maya.

Truly, we are all of one mind.

If all of the manifest cosmos derive from Pure Ideas in the Mind of God, then each of us partakes of the Eternal Nature; that each of us is a Pure Idea made manifest. Not only that, but to the extent that we are able to Realize this, to make this self-percept Real to ourselves and to others, we become more Real. That is to say, we, as conscious points or nodes in creation where the Consciousness (spirit) of God becomes more Present, where God's immanence becomes a "superabundance of Reality" [Mircea Eliade].

"where God's immanence becomes a "superabundance of Reality""

thats a great way to describe it.

I look at it this way:
What we consider our 'self' ceases to exist once we physically die, but the effects of our self's actions continue to have an effect for a damn long time, if not eternity. It's like the ripple effect (or butterfly effect.)

Person-A performs action-A towards Person-B. Person-B is effected by action-A which causes/influences Person-B to perform action-B towards Person-C... and on and on. "What we do in life echoes in eternity"

I spend a lot of time pondering causality, it really blows my mind.  :mushroom2:

IMO, you dont ever cease to exist, except from your own volition. IOW, when you choose to cease existing, you do so.

Also, the question is Do Birds Fly, not can.
