what is the best substitute for vermiculite in both jars and ffor casing, and where can it be conveniently purchased in person (not online)?

Vermiculite is a staple of mushroom cultivation. I have yet to find anything that can replace it in substrate recipe. I would just continue to look for some in your area, and if you can not find any ask a local supplier to order more of it. A got a bunch of people to always go to the same nursery to get their perlite and vermiculate, and now they stock it yearly. Companies are out to make money, and if you inquire about purchasing products from them, especially if you can promise them more customers, they are likely to order the products which you desire.
