"Stretched too thick"

A friend and I were discussing politics the other week. We were talking about Bush, the Iraq war and possible future wars. He goes "We're stretching our military too thick by being in Iraq." I corrected him before he could go any further. "Uh well, it's 'stretching our military too thin', but yeah, you're right. Go on." Then we started arguing about whether it's "stretched too thin" or "stretched too thick".
Now I know that I was right in this instance, but does such a term (spread/stretched too thick) exist at all? Has anyone ever heard that used in any context? He just would not believe me and I'm curious as to whether the "thick" version has ever been said by anyone.

Stretched implies an increase in surface area at the expense of breadth.

There is nothing that I know of that, when stretched or spread, becomes thicker. Thus the term spread too thin

Yeah, dicks are about the only thing that becomes thicker when stretched. Good point.

Stretched to thin. Spread to thin. The implied meaning is that you have an inadequate amount of A to fully cover all of B. If you don't have enough jelly to cover your toast as thick as you like, to avoid having some dry toast you spread it thin.
