Need to become admin
    #5475103 - 04/03/06 03:30 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

So I hope some of you nerds can chime in. I have limited windows experience, dealing mostly in FreeBSD as far as technical stuff goes.

At work, we login to our computers through a domain server or what the hell ever. this account is usually set up with local admin access, but something happend when we let some guy mess with the computer. We now have very limited access to anything, and tons of restrictions. We are not allowed to install new aplications, or even download in internet explorer. I had to ftp some files to rest.

We have a second local account on the computer that is administrator of the computer, but the password was changed.

So here are my questions.

If I were to gain admin, would I be able to set a network login as admin through the typical WinXP User Manager, or is there somethign specific to network logins that I need to do in order to restore its access?

And does anyone know any good methods to regain control?

I am compiling some exploits right now, and making a cd...but alot of these are service specific, and I am not sure that the computer is running much of anything that may be exploitable. I am also preferably looking for stuff precompiled, but non malicious because you know half of source code out there is broken.

So if you have any exploits to escalate my privledges, or know any other tricks for this with windows XPsp2 I _THINK_ it may be 2k, but I doubt it. Please let me know.

I have full access to the computer, but time is a factor, and its a laptop, so mounting the drive on another compurs filesystem isnt really an option. The quicker I can be done with this, the better. I dont want to break things more than they are, because the boss really is skeptical.

Thanks for the help.

PM me if you dont need anything posted publically. I will not redistribute.

I am a little confused.

When I login with his name to the network, I get his desktop, and all his applications & saved data. I cannot, however, install new software, or install a new printer. It tells us that we do not have permission & to change the user settings.

When we login to the network from that computer with a diffrent network login, I think it all works, but im not sure. This would mean that it is a network thing, and not a local problem.

The thing that confuses me is that the computer worked perfect until we brought it to a conference. We undocked it, and brought it, and the guy was trying to change the name from the old owner to the new owner for him with everything....And since then, logging in to the network like we always have, with the same username & password we always have gives us permission problems.

So to me that seems like it is a client side problem, that was done while not connected to the network.

I dont think anyone has the password to the original admin, except the old owner who no longer works here. So I am pretty sure he was logged on to the network, and put the computer in to suspension & undocked it, and went to the conference... and turned it on still logged in as that user with admin access, just not connected.

If anyone can offer any suggestions as to what might help fix this, I would really appreciate it.

try creating a new account, and moving all the documents and settings you want imported to that new account.

it's probably least likely to cause you headaches

We dont have access to create a new account on the server until next week, when the admin comes back. And that is too long for us. We do have termporarya ccess with a guest account, but all visitors use that, and they like to keep it how it is.
