ive been incubating my jars simply by setting them in a tub of water halfway up the sides of the jars with a fishtank heater to heat the water. i just read this could contaminate my jars is there any validity to this?

Wha alot of people do is make a double tub setup. Put some water in one tub with your pump set at a low temp. Put the other tub on topmaking sure that there is not too much water on the bottom tub so that water is not over flowing. Then place jars in top tub. There should be a good amount of heat that would need to keep jars warm. Hope this helped you out some. Im kinda new at this myself.

Back to the original question about contams in the water. You are right that bacteria are not going to crawl up the sides of the jar, and then figure out a way inside, as long as there is not a great deal of organic matter on the surface of the glass for the bacteria to thrive on. But any nutrients that happen to be in the water that you are heating to perfect bacteria growing temps, will encourage the water to contaminate. You definitely would want some disinfectant in the water, but your method would probably work fairly well. On the other hand, it's messier, and harder to keep the water uncontaminated because the water is exposed to every activity that you perform in the tub, instead of being sealed in a heat-bomb, or isolated somewhat in a tub in tub. But if you're careful about keeping the water clean, I don't see why your method wouldn't work.

You can do it that way, but it's not advisable at all.
Imagine what will happen when you pick up a jar?
Oh shit! I just got water all over the top of my other jars! Now I have wet filters that are perfect transports for contamination! Damnit! All this work for nothing......

or you could make a heatbomb! They work incredibly well, but avoid making it out of glass (I learned that one the hard way)... plastic bottles spread heat out much better.
