two questions

1) check out the pics below. is that quart jar of substrate too much for a container that size? I was thinking some verm. on the bottom followed by the entire quart jar and then followed by a nice thick top layer of coco and verm. What are the pros and cons of doing this.

2) I just got my fish tank heater today so I set up my TiT. Do you all put cinderblocks on top to push the water up the sides of the container? If not, then the bottom will be warmer then the top, right? Just wondering...

Yah, id say its too much. use half for that container, and half for another. and about the cinder blocks, Id say not to use them, but you might want to ask other people just in case.

No. If anything, it might not be enough . You want between a 2"-4" substrate layer. By the time you break that up, it won't be as much as you think.
You might want to check into spawning your grain to some coir to get more substrate to case
There are better ways to set up your TIT. Some peeps use zip ties to secure the tubs together.
Good Luck

I use coat hangers through holes drilled in the handles to hold them together.

No, it isn't.
Spawning to coir would mean you were using the coir as a substrate.
Casing with coir would mean you were putting a 25% of the thickness of the substrate layer of coir(usually mixed with verm or peat or both) OVER your substrate. To aid in contam reduction and provide moisture to the myc network.
