Bulk Casing technique?
    #547394 - 02/11/02 03:43 AM (15 years, 3 months ago)

Ok, so its time for me to try to beef up my yields, space and money are issues so I began to come up with a new methods of bulk casing in hopes that I might increase effiency and flushes... Here is what I am thinking now, Please let me know your ideas on its potential effectiveness and things I ought to change/consider.

I have been using large rubbermaid style containers with verm/substrate/soil in tin baking pan casings.

The proposal is to fill the bottom of the rubbermaid with perilite and a significant amount of water, then a thin verm layer followed by substrate, and finished with probably a 50/50+ mix.

the major changes would be that this casing would occupy the entire container, not just the center. Obviously an incresed need for misting would follow, but would the perilite on the bottom help to provide water as needed, because in the last flushes It seemed that the cakes would shrink and dry far too quickly. my hope is that with perilite the water exchange might be slowed and more of an as needed basis as to prevent fat asses but keep more flushes... am I missing something with this concept? Any better ideas for bulk casing in a small attic type environment?

Hmmm ya... I have hear much about straw... Thats the way yo go hu? that would just replace the 50/50+ mix correct everything else would stay the same? How bout that bottom layer of perilite think that would work/help?

Straw as bulk substrate.
Just mix some spawn with pasteurized wheat straw... no perlite.... once colonized you can case with 50/50.
Straw!
