So, for those of you who have dunked straw logs, you ever notice how the water afterwards has this cool blue tint to it? Wild stuff. Unforchunatly this log i just dunked was a bigum... fucker probably weighed over 50 lbs taking it out of the water, and it wasnt too much lighter going in, so i think i may have done a little more harm than good, but i really wanted to give it a dunk with a little bleach because there was this one spot on the side that was looking a little funky, but it had a few pings poping off on it, and it looked like a lot more on the way, only problem is i dont think there are going to be all that many on the ends now, hehe. I know im going to have Roger commenting on how i wasnt supposed to touch it, hehe, but i saw some results of someone who dunked it right before the first flush and that fucker just exploded with fruits. Anyway, if its a success ill post some pics, if it goes to hell... then well, fuck it no use sharing missery. but for those of you mycro pron fans, here is a shot from a recent casing. Golden Teacher multispore, spawned from rye/millet onto straw/bagged dehydrated cow manure, cased with 50/50+ The substrate was made pretty thin so it took a while to get pins initiated, and when they did, the mushrooms really didnt grow all that big. but hey, better than nothing. I havnt been having much luck with bulk lately, not giving enough air exchange i think. and stuff gets overheated.

I think your referring to my strawlogs...I posted a bunch of stuff about them a month or two ago now.
Dunking before the first flush is definitely recommended, just don't do it too long. I had one log completely abort b/c i left it in the dunk for too long (a little over 24 hours). The ideal amount of time should be between 6 and 12 hours I've found, otherwise they get soggy and thats no good. Also, I never used Bleach, just a little H2O2. Was this log your talking about dunked before its first flush, or it's second?

Oh, i dunked it before the first flush, and i only had it in the water for about 45 minutes, it seems to have been good enough though, took longer than that for it to finish draining. I didnt use a lot of bleach, just a little. A small enough amount you could drink it, i actual taste it to make sure its not too much :P

heh, not so good i noticed to big blotches of tric growing on it in those dark spots i said where looking a bit nasty to me. So since there are pins on it starting to grow, i dont want to throw it out. I salted those areas to hell, hope that will hold it off long enough to get a few mushies off it, if not, oh well, sucks to be me. It was a bit of a disaster from the get go, I didnt soak my straw overnight before pasterising it, so that ment some of the leftover seeds in there didnt get germinated until after, and so where not killed by the pasterization, so i had a couple green shoots running around in that log, im assuming some started to rot. Live and learn, dont go for the shortcuts. All i had to do is not be a lazy bastard and start the soak the night before... but no.... i was tired. heh.

You do not need to pre soak overnight. When I do logs I soak in a Hydrated (Hy-yield) Lime and Bleach solution for one hour. Then pasteurize normally. That should ward off contamns during colonization...

Agreed, a one to two hour presoak is plenty. I've found the biggest cause of straw logs contaminating just as first flush arrives to be pasteurizing at too high a temp. Keep the temp between 140F to 150F for 60 to 90 minutes for best results. RR
