Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor cultures 2/22)

I found this patch while walking down the sidewalk. The person who owns the yard allowed me to harvest the patch. Turkey tail is a well known medicinal mushroom that grows throughout the world. It has extremely potent antioxidant properties. I will be drying these specimens and using them in tea.

I let him know that he had some fungus growing in his front yard. I gave him its name and medicinal use. He was more than happy to let me take it. Joshua

Here are three tissue cultures I started tonight. I dipped the tissue in a dilute H2O2 solution before placing them onto the agar.

Yeah man... This is the most common fungus in northern ohio forests by far... I didn't even learn of its great medicinal potential until i read GGMM! (which was only a few months ago) I bet with 5 acres of forest, you could harvest a pound on a single trip! (at least here!)

I bet you could get more than that. The patch I found probably weighed a quarter pound. I am drying the cleaned specimens right now. I read that the shrooms should be ground and boiled. That's what I'll do. I have cultures also that I will be updating. I currently have contams in 2/3 of my dishes. As soon as I get them cleaned up via transfer, I will post an update. Joshua

Here are the cultures I started on the 10th. I thought I had some contams and transfered two cultures to the same plate. Notice that the mycelium at some points grew straight into the fruiting body rather than digressing back to the mycelial form (bottom two). I thought my flash was washing out the photos so I turned it off, turns out I should have left it as it was.
