noob who needs information

hey, im new to shroom hunting and i plan on hunting for some Panaeolus subbalteatus in New Hampshire. Can anybody tell me if there are any dangerous look-a-likes in my region or give me any tips on finding some.

Look in hay bails and horse manure compost.. mainly spring/fall, also summer.
A lot of things may be mistaken for them, but some things that resemble them don't share the same habitat. Most people confuse other panaeolus/panaeolina species for them, and sometimes psathyrella, since in its drying process, the cap can take on a very similar color pattern.

are any of the things that can be mistaken for them poisonous?

Possibly, but it isn't likely if you come to know the panaeolus genus well by taking your time, being careful, and researching well.
If in doubt you can always post regarding your finds here and ask the opinions of others first.
This forum (some of the people on it anyway) is pretty good at identifying panaeolus to at least genus with no problem.

Get a field guide. They're not expensive and very helpful.
