Yes, you can poison your plants and cause them to lose their color and turn white. Its light poison.

If you go over the max W/sq f, will it be bad for you plants?

If your refering to the light calculator i posted, no. Maximum probably isn't the best word, it should be optimum. Going over this would be bad though. And if you don't have the correct ventilation to keep the temperature below 30oC then that will certainly effect your plants, but if you need to boost your wattage a bit, try flourecents, daylight or red bulbs and UV (blacklight) tubes will all help a bit and could boost your harvest buy 25%+. Rumours suggest that using UV strip lights increases potency too.

iv seen 100w sq' and it did no harm.. But compared to the power costs its not worth it. The heat the light makes is much more of an issue than the light its self.

Yea man. My first indoor hydro grow had 600w for about 6' square, and they suffered mostly from the heat rather than the light. Stiil got around 75g+ per plant though (3 plants).
