Rags to Riches

Clorox
In May 1912, five men pooled $100 each and started Clorox. The group had no experience in bleach-making chemistry but suspected that the brine found in salt ponds in San Francisco Bay could be converted into bleach.

The Limited
In 1963, 26-year-old Leslie Wexner left his family's retail store after having an argument with his father. He opened one small store in a strip mall in Columbus, Ohio. Today the company operates thousands of stores across the United States.

Gateway 2000
Using $10,000 he borrowed from his grandmother, Ted Waitt started the company in his father's South Dakota barn in 1985. Because a typical computer-industry campaign would have been too costly, Waitt invented Gateway's now famous cowhide-print boxes. Today Gateway's revenues exceed $3 billion.

Coca-Cola
Pharmacist John Pemberton invented a soft drink in his backyard in 1886. Asa Chandler bought the company for $2,300 in 1891. Current sales now exceed $20 billion every year.

Marriot
Willard Marriot and his fiancee-partner started a nine-seat A&W soda fountain with $3,000 in 1927. They demonstrated a knack for hospitality and clever marketing from the beginning.

Nike
In the early 1960s, Philip Knight and his college track coach sold imported Japanese sneakers from the trunk of a station wagon. Start-up costs totaled $1,000.

United Parcel Service
In 1907 two Seattle teenagers pooled their cash, came up with $100, and began a message and parcel delivery service for local merchants.

Wrigley's Gum
In 1891 young William Wrigley Jr. started selling baking soda in Chicago. To entice new customers, he threw in two packages of chewing gum with every sale. Guess what the customers were more excited about?

Amazon.com
In 1994 Jeff Bezos came across a report projecting annual web growth around 2,300 percent. So Bezos left his Wall Street job, headed to Seattle in an aging Chevy Blazer, and drafted his business plan en route. His e-business, Amazon.com, initially focused on selling books over the Internet, but Bezos later expanded his product offerings to include toys, consumer electronics, software, home improvement products, and more. Today Amazon.com generates over $5 billion in annual sales.

Just goes to show how much you can do with so little.
