False Excuses and Moral Growth
    #5465453 - 03/31/06 08:36 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Here is an article about honesty, moral growth and the inter-relation between the two, as well as the inimical barrier of dishonesty. Primarily it is self-honesty which is in concern here - and just as it should be. After all, every other kind of interpersonal honesty naturally stems from, and is supported by a strong, stable foundation of intrapersonal honesty.

"In recent years, many philosophers and psychologists have adopted a surprisingly positive view of dishonesty, arguing the lying to oneself and others is a necessary, healthy, and moral strategy of everyday life. This paper examines the morality of one form of dishonesty: the false excuse, understood as deception of self or others disavowing wrongdoing so as to avoid harm to the self. Although honestly acknowledging misdeeds can be difficult, false excuses entail significant risks, such as damage to relationships, slippery slopes of lies, and emotional harms. Less obviously, they also inhibit moral growth by concealing character flaws and diminishing motivations to change."

Enjoy the read.
