Cure for Overlay??? At least preventitive?
    #5465386 - 03/31/06 08:15 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

line your casing pan with a piece of a garbadge bag.

If the Substrate shrinks the bag will expand and temporarily keep a seal againt the side of the casing and the pan.

Seems to promote a healthy 3rd flush.

also stops light in a clear tray.

bonus

Any one else try this??

Ill make a pictorial this month.

That will stop side pinning, but how, exactly, will it prevent overlay?

Not all of it is  that bad. The stuff that looks like a doormat is what you want to avoid. The stuff that looks like white pudding will pin. This is for those of us who are to lazy to patch.

turns to then to

I'm not saying it's a good thing, but a lot of people overly panic over it.

Doesnt stop overlay, that is caused by over colonization of the casing layer, that can still happen. It does help elliminate side pinning however and even up the pinsets. I line all my trays with foil, because it seems to work better then the garbage bags, easier. Its no cure all, but it helps with the even pinset.

The thing is you lose all the advantages you tried to gain by adding a casing layer, ie. microclimate and added moisture for the mushrooms to grow nice and BIG.

Thank yea hippie chick.
Now I know how lining your thing with foil is a good idea and all but what about foil getting into the shrooms and causing Alzheimer's? That is the reason why I did not do it but man there is a big gap so I stuffed the gap with caseing lol I hope that wasnt a dumb idea. Anyway What about Alzheimer's? Is it worth it?

I think the whole thing that the guy who originally made this post was not understood. He was saying basically use the garbage bag in the tray in place of foil. The idea was that as it lost moisture it would shrink with it and keep the seal, sealed. Its kind of a pointless thing, since if you keep the moisture up where it should be, this shouldn't be a a problem. I think allot of the noobs on here need to just be more patient and more careful when they do things. Too many stupid people think they have a good idea and modify a tek. For the first grow, fucking stick to the tek. Sorry i was ranting... AND USE FUCKING SPELL CHECK!

The thing here is IME I isolated a very fast sector that ripped through substrates but never fruited it was "a veg only" substrain all it did was grow thick "blobs" of myc and there was nothing I could do but to reisolate another sector with fruiting capabilties.
Remember stroma and overlay are two different things!

I misunderstood what overlay actually was.  As Scatmanrav pointed out.

Apparently Ive never had overlay.  Just shrunken casings and side pinning.

Thought it might be worth sharing.
